What is a project manager architect?

Project Manager Architects are professionals who combine architectural expertise with project management skills to oversee the design, planning, and execution of building projects. They coordinate teams of architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure projects meet client requirements, stay on schedule, and remain within budget. Their role involves managing communication between stakeholders, solving design and construction challenges, and ensuring compliance with regulations and quality standards. Project Manager Architects play a key role in delivering successful construction projects from conception to completion.

How does a project manager architect typically balance design vision with project constraints such as budget and timeline?

A Project Manager Architect is often responsible for aligning the creative goals of a project with practical considerations like budget, schedule, and client requirements. This involves frequent collaboration with design teams, engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure that the architectural vision is maintained without exceeding resource limits. Effective communication, proactive problem-solving, and strong negotiation skills are essential for addressing conflicts between design ambitions and project constraints. By regularly reviewing project progress and making informed adjustments, Project Manager Architects help deliver successful outcomes that meet both aesthetic standards and practical demands.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager Architect, you need a combination of architectural design expertise, project management skills, and a relevant degree (such as architecture or construction management), often supported by licensure and PMP certification. Proficiency with CAD/BIM software, project scheduling tools, and industry-standard documentation platforms is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to client specifications while meeting regulatory and quality standards.

Job description

KGD Architecture is an award-winning full-service design firm headquartered in Washington, DC, with additional offices in Arlington, Virginia; Boston, Massachusetts; and Bangkok, Thailand. Our work spans architecture, urban planning, and interior design, with a diverse portfolio that includes affordable housing, multifamily residential, institutional, corporate/commercial, and mixed-use clients.

We are a firm built on the belief that design should reflect the values and culture of the communities it serves. To that end, KGD Architecture has joined Aeterna Group, a new national firm comprised of five architecture and engineering firms united by a shared belief that great design enriches the communities it serves.

KGD Architecture continues to operate under its own name, with the same leadership, same team, and same deep commitment to our clients within the Mid-Atlantic Region and across the United States that have defined our firm since its founding 30 years ago. By joining this national collective, KGD Architecture has access to shared resources, broader expertise, and a national network of like-minded firms working toward the same goal.

We are seeking a Project Architect with 6-10 years of experience to join our Washington, DC studio. This is a key role for candidates eager to contribute to impactful, design-driven work within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.

Success at KGD Means
  • You are agile, detail-oriented, and committed to design and technical excellence. You take initiative, enjoy leading project documentation, and bring experience coordinating complex teams and consultants. Youโ€™re excited by the opportunity to work on a diverse range of building typesโ€”from multifamily housing and commercial office to mission-driven public architecture.
  • Ideas: We believe in a meritocracy of ideas. We look to everyone to actively contribute to the discourse in the firm.
  • Knowledge: We believe that expertise is the result of lifelong learning. We are not expected to know everything, but rather to passionately pursue answers, develop new skills and deepen our knowledge.
  • Ethos: We strive for excellence in the concept, quality, of everything we create.
  • Individual: We value individuals who bring the highest standards of professionalism and personal integrity in the way they work. Each person can develop and contribute their wealth of attributes, skills and knowledge to support the overall health of the firm.
  • Team: We value the power of interdisciplinary integration. A positive team culture in which everyone collaborates openly towards common goals is essential.
  • Firm: We have a history of making transformative contributions to the profession and our communities. We are constantly innovating and attempting to bring new approaches, solutions and processes to our work.
  • Leads the development of construction documents and detailing.
  • Coordinates across disciplines with consultants, contractors, and clients.
  • Supports design development with clarity, technical insight, and creativity.
  • Contributes to project delivery across all phases, from schematic design through construction administration.
  • Mentors junior team members and participate in internal reviews and critiques.
  • Participates in the conceptual design and provides full support throughout the entire project.
  • Liaises with project management, other architects, and consultants.
  • Develops and represents lead technical viewpoint on projects.
  • Coordinates with the Project Director and Project Manager on appropriate technical solutions and product strategies.
  • Project size differentiates this position from the senior level.
Qualifications
  • Holds a bachelorโ€™s or masterโ€™s degree in architecture.
  • Has 6โ€“10 years of professional experience, including Revit-based construction document production.
  • Demonstrates strong design sensibility with an interest in building performance and constructability.
  • Demonstrates clear verbal and graphic communication skills.
  • Technology: Must be proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
  • Licensure preferred or in active pursuit, LEED accreditation a plus.
