Job description

Do you believe stories can change lives?

At the Animal Protection Society of Durham, every day brings incredible stories of hope, resilience, second chances, and the people who make them possible. We're looking for a creative, energetic, and mission-driven Communications & Marketing Manager to help tell those stories and inspire our community to adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, and advocate for animals in need.

This is more than a marketing position. It's an opportunity to become the voice of one of Durham's most recognized nonprofits and help thousands of people connect with our lifesaving mission.

If you're someone who sees a heartwarming adoption, a volunteer walking a nervous dog, or a successful medical recovery and immediately starts thinking, "People need to hear this story," we'd love to meet you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Tell the stories that showcase the impact of APS through compelling writing, photography, video, and social media.
  • Create engaging content across social media, our website, email newsletters, blogs, and print materials.
  • Develop marketing campaigns that increase adoptions, recruit foster families and volunteers, and support fundraising efforts.
  • Maintain and update the APS website with current stories, events, educational resources, and organizational information.
  • Collaborate with every department to identify meaningful stories about our animals, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Design graphics, flyers, presentations, signage, and promotional materials using Canva or similar design tools.
  • Coordinate media outreach, assist with press releases, and help identify opportunities to highlight APS in the community.
  • Track marketing performance and recommend new ideas to grow our audience and increase engagement.
  • Support communications before, during, and after fundraising events and community programs.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Creative thinker who enjoys generating new ideas and bringing them to life.
  • Strong social media and digital marketing experience.
  • Graphic design experience using Canva or similar software.
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Positive, collaborative attitude and willingness to work closely with staff across the organization.
  • Passion for animal welfare and building meaningful connections with the community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in nonprofit communications, marketing, journalism, or public relations.
  • Experience managing organizational social media accounts.
  • Website management experience.
  • Photography and basic video editing skills.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms.
  • Knowledge of social media analytics and digital marketing best practices.

WHY APS?:
Every photo you take, every story you write, and every campaign you create has the power to save lives.

At APS, communications isn't just marketing—it's connecting people with animals who need homes, inspiring volunteers to give their time, helping donors understand their impact, and strengthening our community's commitment to animal welfare.

You'll work alongside an incredible team of passionate professionals while helping thousands of animals find safety, healing, and loving families each year.

If you're a creative communicator who wants your work to have real purpose, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today and help tell the stories that change lives.
