Job description

Burns & McDonnell’s industry-leading Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice is seeking a highly motivated Substation Engineering Project Manager to lead engineering project execution, drive strategic growth initiatives, and support long-term business development efforts from our Kansas City headquarters. This position offers a unique opportunity to play a strategic leadership role in the ongoing expansion of our Substation group, contributing to regional and national T&D growth. The successful candidate will manage complex substation projects ranging from 12kV to 765kV, providing direction to multidisciplinary engineering teams while delivering high-quality results that align with Burns & McDonnell’s core values of safety, integrity, client commitment, and innovation.

The ideal candidate is an engineering project manager with design experience in substations and related fields, extensive industry experience, and strong leadership ability. The candidate has a strong working knowledge of project financials, scope, schedule, and risk management with a history of success. The ideal candidate should be able to manage substation projects for major accounts with large multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the full life cycle of substation engineering projects (concept to closeout).
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver safety, technical excellence, and quality compliance.
  • Develop and monitor project schedules, budgets, risk mitigation strategies, and overall financial performance.
  • Serve as the primary client contact, building long-term relationships and identifying new business opportunities.
  • Lead proposals, scope development, contract negotiations, and strategic project pursuits.
  • Oversee internal project financials, staffing, QA/QC adherence, legal coordination, and change management.
  • Mentor and develop project team members, support recruitment efforts, and contribute to succession planning.
  • Collaborate closely with department leadership to drive strategic business growth and support long-term organizational goals.
  • Responsible for compliance with all internal policies, safety regulations, and client-specific standards.


Additional responsibilities for the Project Manager may include:

  • Account management as a local point of contact for key clients in the region.
  • Conduct quality reviews on design projects as needed.
  • Provide feedback on staff performance to Department Management and work with them to assign project opportunities that support staff development goals.
  • Collaborate with other Project Managers across Regional and/or Branch Offices and mentor Project Managers in Training (PMITs).

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited curriculum.
  • Minimum of 7 years of engineering design and engineering project management experience.
  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change. Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Ability to travel. Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • 10 years of engineering design and engineering project management experience.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration strongly preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or advanced degree in engineering/construction management.
