Summary
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Surveyor- Project Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting precise land surveys and providing critical data to support the planning, design, and construction of heavy civil projects.
Location
At NWC, we go where the work is, which exposes your career to exciting opportunities. We relocate our teams based on the work that is available. While our home office is located in Bozeman, MT, our project sites are generally located throughout the Western United States.
Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with engineers, owners and construction managers to interpret plan sets and provide accurate survey files and 3D models for construction layout.
  • Perform topographic and geodetic surveys to produce detailed maps and terrain surfaces.
  • Utilize specialized equipment such as GPS systems, Machine Control Systems, and Drones for construction layout and quantity calculations
  • Prepare and maintain reports of survey data and as-built conditions.
  • Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, and other characteristics of terrain.
  • Ensure the accuracy of survey data, measurements, and calculations.
  • Verify data and document all phases of survey work through notes, sketches, and drawings.
  • Adjust and operate surveying instruments, such as prisms and electronic distance-measuring equipment.
  • Develop and manage design files, surface models, and machine control data.
  • Monitor and document pay quantities and maintain accurate pay logs.
  • Conduct drone flights for aerial surveys and data collection.
  • Prepare as-built drawings and maintain comprehensive survey logs to document the final state of the project.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws in the execution of surveying tasks.
  • Work closely with field construction personnel (Superintendents, Foremen and Project Managers).
  • Provide suggestions to refine workflow and boost efficiency.

Position Requirements
Work Environment
  • Active construction site, mining area, or other industrial setting where large scale projects are taking place.
  • Working around various heavy equipment operations.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, or wind.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted Driver's License.
  • Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Geomatics or related fields. Equivalent experience in a construction-related position will also be considered.
  • Proficiency in using surveying equipment and software, including Autodesk Civil 3D and Trimble products.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Must be willing to travel and relocate. Project sites are located throughout the Western United States, so relocation and/or travel are required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in construction surveying, preferably in heavy civil construction projects.
  • Previous experience in the heavy civil construction industry.
  • OSHA 30 Certification a plus
  • Current first aid/CPR certification a plus

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments.
  • Ability to kneel, stoop, crouch, climb or crawl.
  • Ability to maintain balance.
  • Ability to safely and effectively perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
