Geotechnical Project Engineer

Requisition Number: 2026-1619-05

S&M E is looking for a Geotechnical Project Engineer to join our team, supporting work across our Columbia, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia offices.

As a Geotechnical Project Engineer, you will oversee and execute diverse geotechnical engineering projects through all phases of development. You'll use your technical knowledge to direct project teams, collaborate with clients, and provide dependable, onโ€‘time solutions that support major building and infrastructure projects across both public and private industries.

Your Dayโ€‘toโ€‘Day
  • Project Leadership: Oversee geotechnical projects through all stages, ensuring successful delivery while meeting project timelines, budgets, and quality expectations.
  • Technical Analysis: Evaluate field observations and laboratory results to develop practical, reliable, and costโ€‘effective engineering recommendations.
  • Documentation & Business Support: Prepare proposals, technical documentation, and project deliverables while contributing to client growth and business development efforts.
  • Client & Contractor Coordination: Build strong relationships with clients, contractors, and project partners to maintain communication, address issues, and keep projects moving forward.
  • Team Development: Provide guidance and support to junior team members while fostering a collaborative environment focused on safety and professional growth.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Mining, or a related engineering field.
  • 4+ years of related geotechnical engineering experience, which preferably includes some extent of project management responsibilities.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Companyโ€‘provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions.
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods.
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40โ€“50 lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary.
