The main difference between a Project Engineer and a Construction Manager lies in their focus and responsibilities. Project Engineers typically handle technical aspects, planning, and supporting project execution, often working closely with engineers and designers. Construction Managers oversee the entire construction process, managing teams, schedules, and budgets on-site. Both roles require similar credentials and are integral to construction projects, but their day-to-day tasks and focus areas differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, project scheduling tools like MS Project or Primavera, and certifications such as PMP or PE are often required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams and manage project challenges effectively. These skills and qualifications are critical for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

How does a project engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Project Engineers play a central role in coordinating between engineering, procurement, and construction teams to ensure project objectives are met. They regularly communicate with design engineers to clarify technical requirements, work closely with procurement to source materials on schedule, and liaise with construction managers to address on-site challenges. Effective collaboration is essential for resolving issues quickly, maintaining timelines, and ensuring quality standards. This role often requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to mediate between diverse teams to keep the project moving smoothly.

What is a project engineer?

Municipal Engineering Project Engineer

Our Georgia Municipal team is hiring and focused on delivering impactful local government infrastructure projects, including roadway and sidewalk design, parks, culverts and drainage, sanitary sewer systems, and stormwater/water resources work for cities and counties across the region. The team works in a highly collaborative environment and offers strong exposure across a wide range of municipal projects, giving engineers hands-on responsibility and meaningful project experience. This is a great opportunity for those looking to grow their technical expertise, take ownership early, and build a long-term career path as the team continues to expand its presence across key Georgia markets and develop future leaders in municipal engineering.

The ideal candidate for this role is a civil or municipal engineer with a strong interest in public infrastructure and local government work, ideally with 4+ years of experience in roadway, drainage, or water resources design. Candidates should either hold their PE license or be actively working toward obtaining it as we proudly support engineers throughout the licensure process and their overall professional development.

Location

This position will be based in either our Atlanta or Augusta office, with field work as needed to support project delivery. We support hybrid schedules and offer a collaborative, team-oriented environment where employees work closely together, stay engaged with projects, and enjoy strong in-office connections and support.

The Impact You Will Have
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of municipal infrastructure that directly impacts local communities
  • Support engineering decisions through hydraulic and budget analyses that provide meaningful, data-driven input for clients
  • Advance project designs from concept through completion by developing, reviewing, and validating calculations and design components
  • Produce and refine layouts that connect individual project elements to the overall design intent and community purpose
  • Collaborate across disciplines to ensure designs are coordinated, constructible, and aligned with project goals
  • Align design work with specifications, cost estimates, and pay applications to support accurate and efficient project delivery
  • Take ownership of assigned design files and support quality assurance through independent QC review processes
What You Will Need
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related discipline required
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience with municipal projects, including stormwater, water distribution, and sanitary sewers
  • Licensed PE in Georgia is preferred, or a desire to obtain licensure quickly
  • Increasing skills in creativity and judgment in the application of engineering
  • Increased knowledge of software appropriate for the discipline, showing proficiency in multiple programs specific to this discipline
  • Ability to collaborate with others in a team environment
  • Experience in ESRI ArcMap GIS and/or hydraulic water modeling is a plus
  • Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus #LI-ML1
