What does a project engineer manager do?

A Project Engineer Manager oversees engineering projects from conception to completion, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. They coordinate between various engineering teams, manage project schedules, allocate resources, and communicate with clients and stakeholders. Their responsibilities also include resolving technical issues, ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards, and reporting on project progress. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and organizational skills.

How does a project engineer manager typically balance technical oversight with team leadership responsibilities?

A Project Engineer Manager is often responsible for both guiding the technical aspects of projects and leading a multidisciplinary team. This balance involves setting clear technical goals, reviewing engineering solutions, and ensuring project milestones are met, while also facilitating communication, mentoring team members, and resolving conflicts. Effective managers schedule regular check-ins, delegate tasks according to team strengths, and foster a collaborative environment to keep projects on track. By combining technical expertise with strong people management skills, they ensure both project success and team development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project engineer manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and budgeting systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills help drive project success and foster collaboration among stakeholders. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

Serving as a critical link between engineering teams, construction contractors, regulatory agencies, landowners, and utility clients, you will help deliver infrastructure projects safely and on schedule. We welcome applications from motivated recent engineering graduates, early-career engineers, and experienced professionals looking for a dynamic, multi-faceted project delivery role. • Conduct site visits, field walkdowns, and constructability reviews to monitor construction activities, ensuring compliance with design plans, permit conditions, environmental commitments, and client standards.

  • Support project planning, scheduling, and budgeting. Identify access routes, staging areas, and laydown yards, while coordinating utility locates, material deliveries, and subcontractors.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for landowners, clients, agency representatives, and field crews to communicate project updates, resolve site issues, and ensure smooth field operations.

  • Maintain accurate project logs, status reports, permit records, photographic documentation, and restoration/reclamation records.

  • Assist with field investigations, surveying, engineering data collection, and utility design activities as assigned.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Engineering, or another ABET-accredited engineering discipline.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout Montana (including overnight travel) and work in varying terrain and weather conditions.

  • Strong organizational, communication, project management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and digital project documentation tools.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Prior experience in utility engineering, electric transmission/distribution, construction oversight, or permitting workflows.

  • Experience interfacing directly with regulatory agencies, DOTs, railroads, or landowners.

  • Exposure to CADD (AutoCAD/MicroStation), GIS platforms, or field surveying/staking tools.

  • Knowledge of utility construction methods, materials, and environmental compliance best practices.

What You'll Get

  • Direct involvement across all phases of utility infrastructure project delivery, balancing technical engineering, field operations, and project management.

  • Professional development, mentorship from senior engineers, and clear advancement paths within HBK and the broader Quanta Services network.

  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, disability and employer paid life insurance. In addition, all full-time roles are also eligible for 401(k) retirement plan with company match, paid time off and holidays.
