What does a project engineer manager do?

A Project Engineer Manager oversees engineering projects from conception to completion, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. They coordinate between various engineering teams, manage project schedules, allocate resources, and communicate with clients and stakeholders. Their responsibilities also include resolving technical issues, ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards, and reporting on project progress. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and organizational skills.

How does a project engineer manager typically balance technical oversight with team leadership responsibilities?

A Project Engineer Manager is often responsible for both guiding the technical aspects of projects and leading a multidisciplinary team. This balance involves setting clear technical goals, reviewing engineering solutions, and ensuring project milestones are met, while also facilitating communication, mentoring team members, and resolving conflicts. Effective managers schedule regular check-ins, delegate tasks according to team strengths, and foster a collaborative environment to keep projects on track. By combining technical expertise with strong people management skills, they ensure both project success and team development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project engineer manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and budgeting systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills help drive project success and foster collaboration among stakeholders. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

  • $80,000 - $100,000 (base salary)
  • Regular Full-Time

Robert Peccia & Associates is seeking a motivated and technically proficient Project Engineer to join our Site Civil Group. This position will support the planning, design, permitting, and construction of site civil projects across Montana and the Western United States.

RPA’s Site Civil Group provides comprehensive engineering services that bring projects to life from initial planning through construction. Our team delivers practical, coordinated site design solutions for individuals, businesses, architects, institutions, and government agencies. Project work may include commercial and institutional facilities, residential developments, roads, streets and pedestrian facilities, recreation facilities, and projects for federal and state land agencies.

As a Project Engineer, you will contribute to resilient, cost-effective infrastructure solutions that balance performance, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. You will work closely with project managers, engineers, surveyors, planners, clients, and regulatory agencies to support efficient project delivery and high-quality design outcomes. Responsibilities may include:

In this role, you will support and lead design efforts across a broad range of site civil and site development projects.

  • Design & Engineering: Perform detailed civil site design, including grading, drainage, stormwater treatment, utility layout, access and circulation, parking lots, sidewalks, paths, parks, local roads, and site improvements using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Plan Production: Prepare construction documents, including plans, specifications, technical reports, and cost estimates that meet applicable codes, standards, client requirements, and agency expectations.
  • Technical Analysis: Conduct engineering calculations, feasibility assessments, site evaluations, and design alternative reviews to support sound project decisions and practical engineering solutions.
  • Permitting & Agency Coordination: Assist with permitting, agency approvals, and coordination with local, state, and federal review agencies to help projects move efficiently from concept through construction.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Coordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams, clients, subconsultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies to support clear communication and successful project delivery.
  • Project Support: Assist project managers with scope development, budgeting, scheduling, quality control, construction administration, and technical reviews to ensure high-quality outcomes.

Requirements

We are looking for a detail-oriented, self-motivated engineer who enjoys solving problems and working in a collaborative team environment. The ideal candidate has:

  • Education & Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. Professional Engineer license in Montana, or the ability to obtain within six months, is preferred.
  • Experience: 4–8 years of progressive experience in site development, site civil engineering, municipal civil engineering, or related infrastructure projects.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and a strong understanding of grading, drainage, stormwater systems, utility design, site layout, construction documents, and civil design standards.
  • Communication & Problem Solving: Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with clients, agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Team & Culture Fit: A proactive, collaborative approach and alignment with RPA’s core values, employee-owned culture, and commitment to practical, sustainable engineering solutions.
