Project Engineer (Construction / Infrastructure)

General Summary

The Project Engineer supports the planning, coordination, and execution of infrastructure and construction projects from pre-construction through completion.

This role assists in estimating project scope, coordinating schedules, managing material flow, and supporting project financial performance. The Project Engineer works closely with superintendents, subcontractors, and customers to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and profitably.

Projects may include work for NCDOT, municipalities, and commercial clients. This position is ideal for someone looking to grow into a Project Manager role within a construction environment.

Typical hours are Monday through Friday, with extended hours, nights, and weekends as needed based on project demands. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in estimating project scope, costs, and bid preparation
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and support development of construction estimates
  • Review project plans, specifications, and contracts for accuracy and completeness
  • Coordinate schedules, materials, and subcontractors with field operations
  • Track project progress, timelines, and deliverables
  • Support project financial tracking, billing, and cost control
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation, including change orders and reports
  • Communicate project updates with internal teams, customers, and stakeholders
  • Assist in managing subcontractor performance and scheduling
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies, MSHA, OSHA, and project requirements
  • Monitor quality of work and adherence to project specifications
  • Support continuous improvement and process efficiency initiatives
