Project Development Intern information

What does a project development intern do?

A Project Development Intern supports project managers and teams in planning, organizing, and executing projects within an organization. Their responsibilities often include conducting research, preparing reports, assisting with project documentation, and helping to coordinate meetings or schedules. This role provides hands-on experience in project management processes and tools, allowing interns to develop valuable skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. The specific tasks may vary depending on the industry and the company's needs.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a project development intern?

As a Project Development Intern, you'll typically assist with project planning, research, and coordination tasks. You may help draft proposals, conduct market analysis, prepare presentations, and support communication between cross-functional teams. Interns often attend team meetings, track project progress, and contribute to brainstorming sessions. This hands-on involvement provides a broad understanding of project lifecycles and offers opportunities to develop both technical and soft skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project development intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Development Intern, you generally need strong research, organizational, and analytical skills, often supported by coursework or experience in business, management, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Trello, or Asana, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are standout soft skills for supporting project goals and collaborating with diverse stakeholders. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently assisting in project planning, execution, and ensuring successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Project Development Intern vs Project Coordinator?

AspectProject Development InternProject Coordinator
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in related fieldUsually requires some experience or certification in project management
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, learning-focused, entry-levelProfessional setting, managing project tasks and timelines
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in construction, engineering, tech industriesUsed across various industries for project oversight
Search & Comparison IntentLooking to start a career in project managementSeeking to understand roles with more responsibility

The Project Development Intern role is an entry-level position focused on learning and supporting project tasks, often held by students or recent graduates. In contrast, a Project Coordinator has more experience and handles coordination, scheduling, and communication responsibilities within projects. While both roles are essential in project management, the intern position is more about gaining experience, whereas the coordinator role involves more active management and oversight.

Evonik’s Summer Professional Enrichment (SPE) Program is a 12 week internship program that provides undergraduate students an opportunity to gain real-world experience and expand their knowledge beyond their studies in university. Over the summer, interns will apply skills they've acquired through education to their technical project while also gaining experience working on a cross-functional team for a regional group project. We offer summer internship opportunities across the United States in various fields, including manufacturing/operations, and environmental health & safety. During the interview process, we will work with candidates to identify the work setting and location that best aligns with their career aspirations.

Here are some examples of technical projects our previous Evonik summer interns have worked on:

  • Process Engineering Intern : Contributed to the startup activities of a new chemical process, including updating procedures, redlining P&IDs, and creating Gantt charts to enhance process efficiency
  • Research & Development Intern : Engaged in the development of Evonik’s Eudragit® aqueous dispersion polymer coatings, which are used to provide a protective layer for pills, tablets, and capsules, effectively controlling the release and delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
  • Production Engineering Intern : Reviewed and redlined technical drawings for the integration of new flow meter on a centrifuge, ensuring compliance with site engineering standards

By choosing Evonik, you will also have the opportunity to meet executives that are apart of Evonik’s North American Leadership Team (NALT), learn more about Evonik’s business portfolio and network with your peers through a virtual Let’s Connect Series. You can even join an Employee Resource Group at Evonik to connect with like-minded individuals, enhance your professional development, and contribute to a culture of inclusion and innovation that empowers every voice! #earlycareers
