Job description

What The Role Is

Reporting to the Director of Business Development and M&A, the role is responsible for growing the Clearway development and operating platform for utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects, as well as multi-technology complexes. This includes managing the acquisition of both development and operating assets, as well as greenfielding new development projects, in support of Clearway's profitability and strategic goals.ย  The role requires close collaboration with internal subject matter experts, external consultants, and legal counsel. ย ย ย

What You'll Be Doing
  • Manage the project acquisition process: deal origination, valuation, structuring, due diligence, negotiation, and closing of project acquisitions as a key member/manager of a transaction team.
    • Coordinate with internal and external counsel to negotiate and draft definitive transaction documentation.
    • Coordinate with internal constituents and third-party consultants to perform due diligence activities.
    • Work with subject matter experts in project development, engineering, procurement, capital markets, O&M, and others to ensure conformance with underwriting guidelines, investment metrics, and forecasted cash flows. Run sensitivity analyses and generate ideas to optimize valuations and transaction structures.
    • Prepare detailed memos and presentations for senior management and the investment committee.
    • Create and manage tools to monitor market activity and track internal origination strategy to identify new growth areas and M&A targets.
  • Support ongoing origination, development, and financing activities for projects that Clearway owns.
    • Support pricing analysis and bidding strategy to originate offtake contracts for Clearway's 30 GW+ development portfolio of utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects, as well as multi-technology complexes.
    • Work with functional groups, third-party consultants, and various other stakeholders to drive projects forward and perform quantitative analyses to support development and financing judgments.
  • Craft and implement overall strategy within specific regions, identify opportunities, and work with development to allocate the development budget strategically.
  • Drive strategy and execution in emerging growth segments including non-traditional offtake, technology, and/or financing structures, as opportunities present.
    • In consultation with external and internal resources, develop market assessments, production cost models, analytical tools, and business cases for early investments in emerging growth segments.
    • Help connect the dots internally to reposition existing assets (development or operating) for opportunities in emerging growth segments.
    • Support formation and ongoing management of strategic partnerships with major equipment suppliers, operators, investors, project developers, and other value chain participants.
  • Guide strategic initiatives to improve analytical tools and inform key business activities at Clearway.
    • Assist with ongoing efforts to improve financial optimization, underwriting, deal tracking, etc.
    • Develop innovative financial and offtake structures and improve existing quantitative analysis tools.
    • Guide special projects across internal functional groups to drive value creation throughout the development, procurement, construction, and financing processes.
    • Leverage AI tools effectively in support of the aforementioned scope.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree required in finance, business administration, or economics.
  • A minimum of 4-5 years of relevant work experience at a U.S. solar, wind, or energy storage development company/Independent Power Producer in an M&A, finance, or development role with a specific focus on M&A transactions, financial modeling/valuation, project development, and energy markets. Alternatively, the candidate may bring similar and transferable experience from an investment banking firm.
  • Comfort navigating transactions, particularly negotiation of M&A transactions.
  • Excellent aptitude for analytical and financial modeling with demonstrated attention to detail. Strong quantitative skills are a must for this position. Advanced capabilities in Excel and PowerPoint are essential.
  • Ability to effectively summarize complex issues and recommend next steps, both in writing and verbally, in a compelling manner that resonates with the audience.
  • Ability to manage simultaneous projects/work streams, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment unsupervised.ย 
  • Previous mentoring and team management experience.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy project development areas, such as real estate, permitting, grid integration, transmission, offtake, tax, and financing structures.
