ABOUT THE POSITION

As the Controller (internally titled Director, Accounting & Controller) at Bezos Academy, you will evaluate and manage effective accounting and reporting policies, procedures, and systems with a focus on using technology and data to drive continuous improvement. You will own all end-to-end accounting processes, including accounts payable, fixed assets, leasing, tax, treasury management, payroll operations, and the overall financial close process. You will oversee technical accounting research for US GAAP and tax-related matters and will prepare external tax and financial reports. You will own and refine policies and procedures to support a strong internal control environment. You will lead and develop a team to support these activities and the growth of our organization. Above all, you are a mission-driven, experienced accounting professional willing to roll up your sleeves and manage the accounting operation while iterating on the systems and processes necessary to scale our organization.

LOCATION

  • Seattle, WA
  • This role is expected to work in-person with other finance and partner team members in our office in the Eastlake neighborhood of Seattle at least two days a week.
  • Relocation support is available for those willing to relocate to Seattle, WA

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, salaried position.
  • The full salary range for this position in Seattle, WA is $173,000 - $293,000 per year. The upper third of the salary range is typically reserved for employees who have been in the role for multiple years and have demonstrated strong performance over time. Starting salary will vary by qualifications and prior experience.
  • This role includes 15 paid days of vacation, 4 days of paid personal time off, 9 paid days of sick (care) time, 9 paid holidays, 5 paid days off for an organization-wide winter break, and additional time off if required by applicable law. Benefits for this role include medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, a 401(k) plan with a 4% employer contribution match, paid parental leave, an employer-matched flexible spending account for dependent care, and more. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • Valid Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential
  • Ten or more years of relevant accounting experience, including five or more years of team leadership
  • Two or more years of public accounting experience
  • Experience participating in the monthly close process, including reconciliations and financial reporting
  • Experience managing enterprise resource planning (ERP) and accounting systems and driving process improvements
  • Proficiency in researching technical accounting and tax matters

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience managing all aspects of the controllership function for an entire company
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting principles, Form 990 preparation or review, and nonprofit tax and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to translate business objectives into financial data structures used to support measurement of performance, with a keen eye for simplification
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement accounting systems, policies, and processes
  • Track record of designing, rationalizing, implementing, and documenting internal controls
