Language Enrichment Specialists
Position Summary
The Language Enrichment Specialist is an instructional specialist who partners with classroom teachers to intentionally develop students' oral language, vocabulary, communication skills, and early bilingual language acquisition through authentic learning experiences.
Rather than providing stand-alone world language instruction, the specialist pushes into classrooms during Project-Based Learning (PBL), structured play, direct instruction, literacy, exploration, and other core instructional blocks to facilitate meaningful language interactions in both English and Spanish.
Through intentional modeling, conversation, questioning, storytelling, songs, games, and play-based experiences, the specialist helps students naturally acquire common vocabulary, conversational phrases, academic language, and oral communication skills while strengthening literacy development and fostering curiosity about language and culture.
The Language Enrichment Specialist serves as a collaborative instructional partner who supports classroom teachers in embedding purposeful bilingual language experiences throughout the Windsor Early Learning Model.
Essential Responsibilities
Instructional Collaboration
- Push into Kindergarten through Grade 2 classrooms during Project-Based Learning, structured play, direct instruction, literacy, exploration, outdoor learning, and other instructional blocks.
- Plan collaboratively with classroom teachers to intentionally embed oral language development into daily learning experiences.
- Model effective instructional strategies that promote rich student discourse and language development.
- Serve as a language development resource for classroom teachers.
Oral Language Development
- Develop students' expressive and receptive language in English while intentionally introducing and reinforcing oral Spanish.
- Facilitate conversations that encourage students to communicate using complete sentences and academic vocabulary.
- Support students in asking questions, explaining their thinking, negotiating with peers, and engaging in collaborative dialogue.
- Build confidence in oral communication through authentic interactions.
Spanish Language Acquisition
- Foster natural acquisition of oral Spanish through meaningful classroom experiences rather than isolated vocabulary instruction.
- Introduce high-frequency Spanish words, phrases, and conversational language connected to classroom learning.
- Reinforce Spanish language during play, collaborative projects, classroom routines, transitions, songs, movement, storytelling, dramatic play, and exploration.
- Use repetition, modeling, visuals, gestures, and authentic conversation to promote comprehension and oral language development.
- Build a common bilingual vocabulary that students use naturally throughout the school day.
Project-Based Learning Support
- Collaborate with teachers during PBL to intentionally embed English and Spanish language opportunities.
- Design language experiences connected to authentic projects and investigations.
- Facilitate small-group conversations that promote language growth during inquiry and collaborative learning.
- Develop bilingual vocabulary connected to project themes.
Structured Play & Exploration
- Facilitate language-rich interactions during structured play.
- Use dramatic play, construction, sensory exploration, outdoor learning, and collaborative games to strengthen communication skills.
- Introduce Spanish naturally through play scenarios, classroom materials, and peer interactions.
- Encourage students to use newly acquired vocabulary while interacting with classmates.
Literacy Integration
- Strengthen oral language as a foundation for reading and writing.
- Reinforce vocabulary from classroom read-alouds and literacy instruction.
- Support phonological awareness through songs, chants, rhymes, and oral language activities.
- Build background knowledge that enhances comprehension.
Family Engagement
- Provide families with simple strategies for supporting oral language development at home.
- Share bilingual songs, books, games, and conversation starters that encourage continued language practice.
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to an associate or a bachelor's degree, preferred candidates should possess:
- Fluency in English and Spanish with strong oral communication skills in both languages.
- Knowledge of child language acquisition and bilingual development.
- Experience implementing Project-Based Learning and play-based instructional practices.
- Knowledge of the Science of Reading and the role of oral language in literacy development.
- Experience collaborating within inclusive classroom settings.
- Demonstrated ability to engage young learners through storytelling, music, movement, dramatic play, and inquiry-based learning.
Salary Range
$35,000 - $40,000
