Project Architect Project Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project architect project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Architect Project Manager, you need strong architectural design skills, project management experience, and typically a professional degree in architecture along with relevant licensure. Proficiency in tools like AutoCAD, Revit, project management software (such as MS Project), and familiarity with building codes and regulations are essential. Leadership, effective communication, and organizational skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to client specifications while coordinating multidisciplinary teams.

How do project architect project managers balance design responsibilities with project management tasks on a daily basis?

Project Architect Project Managers often split their time between leading the design process and overseeing project schedules, budgets, and team coordination. A typical day involves reviewing design documents, meeting with clients or stakeholders, and collaborating closely with engineers and consultants to address technical challenges. Balancing creative problem-solving with administrative duties is essential, and strong organizational skills help manage competing priorities. Clear communication and delegation are key to ensuring both the design vision and project logistics move forward smoothly.

Can a project architect project manager work as a project manager?

A project architect with project management experience can often perform as a project manager, especially if they have skills in leadership, scheduling, and client communication. However, formal project management certifications like PMP can enhance their qualifications for the role. Transitioning may require additional training in project management methodologies and tools.

Job description

Architectural Project Manager

We’re looking for a talented and motivated Architectural Project Manager (5+ years of experience) to join our team and help bring projects to life from concept through completion. In this role, you’ll lead a variety of commercial and office projects, collaborate closely with clients and teammates, and play a meaningful part in shaping both our projects and our firm’s future.

You’ll have the opportunity to mentor junior staff, contribute to business development efforts, and help refine how we work—all within a supportive, close-knit team environment.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead architectural projects from initial concept through final completion, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget goals are achieved.
  • Oversee design and delivery for a range of projects, including commercial spaces, offices, tenant fit-outs, and small healthcare facilities.
  • Guide the preparation and coordination of construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Mentor and support junior team members, helping them grow in design, documentation, and project coordination.
  • Build strong relationships and coordinate with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
  • Provide responsive, client-focused service by addressing questions or challenges quickly and thoughtfully.
  • Manage multiple projects at once, staying organized and adaptable in a fast-paced setting.
  • Share ideas to improve workflows, project delivery, and office processes.
  • Get involved in marketing and business development efforts, including proposal preparation and strategy.
  • Collaborate with teammates to maintain a positive, team-oriented culture and deliver consistent, high-quality work.
  • Develop functional, efficient space planning solutions that align with client needs.

What You Bring
  • Degree in Architecture
  • 5+ years of experience in an architectural project management or similar role
  • Strong proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD
  • Experience managing projects from design through construction completion
  • Solid experience in space planning, particularly for commercial/office environments
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities effectively
  • Strong communication and coordination skills
  • A client-focused mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving
  • A collaborative leadership style and interest in mentoring others
  • Interest in business development and contributing to firm growth
  • Eligibility and motivation to pursue architectural registration (if not already licensed)

Nice to Have
  • Master’s degree in Architecture
  • Architectural license (or progress toward licensure)
  • Experience with commercial, office, and small healthcare projects
  • Familiarity working with property managers on tenant fit-outs
  • Interest in improving processes and workflows
  • Comfort in a fast-paced, high-volume project environment
  • Engagement or interest in professional organizations like AIA

What It’s Like to Work Here

You’ll be part of a small, collaborative team of about 10–14 people where everyone’s input matters. We pride ourselves on maintaining a supportive, approachable environment where teamwork, open communication, and shared problem-solving are key.

We offer a business casual workplace, use Revit and AutoCAD as our primary tools, and are based in Baltimore City, with the option to transition to a hybrid schedule after approximately 90 days.

Our team enjoys working on a variety of projects with quick turnaround times, so adaptability and organization are key—but so is having fun along the way. We value strong performance and recognize it through year-end bonuses and professional development support, including covering AIA memberships and reimbursing exam costs upon successful completion.
