What does a project accountant do?

A project accountant manages the expenses, billing, and budget for one or more projects. In most cases, the project manager sends bills and invoices to the project accountant for approval and payment, and the accountant maintains records regarding costs and project-related expenses. As a project accountant, your duties and responsibilities include investigating billing issues and overages, as well as forecasting future costs to ensure the company can complete the project within budget. You may also be expected to file tax returns and government reports, so you need excellent writing skills. Finally, you serve as the financial gatekeeper for all aspects of the project, so you need to demonstrate trustworthiness and common sense.

What does a project accountant do?

A Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of specific projects within an organization. They track budgets, costs, billing, and financial reporting for projects, ensuring that all financial processes comply with company policies and standards. Project Accountants work closely with project managers and other team members to monitor progress, provide financial insights, and help ensure that projects are completed within budget and on schedule. Their role is crucial for maintaining financial control and transparency throughout the project lifecycle.

How does a project accountant typically interact with project managers and other departments during the project lifecycle?

Project Accountants play a key liaison role, working closely with project managers to track budgets, monitor costs, and ensure financial compliance throughout each project phase. They often attend regular project meetings to provide updates on financial status and alert teams to potential budget risks. Collaboration with departments like procurement, operations, and finance is common, as Project Accountants reconcile invoices, process payments, and support accurate financial reporting. This cross-functional teamwork helps facilitate smooth project delivery and ensures all financial aspects align with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Accountant, you need a solid background in accounting principles, financial reporting, and project cost management, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with project management software, ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, and sometimes a CPA certification are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure accuracy and collaboration with project teams. These skills enable precise tracking of project finances, compliance with regulations, and successful delivery of projects within budget.

Job description

SAVOYE NORTH AMERICA designs and integrates supply chain solutions. We provide innovative solutions to some of the most perplexing logistics processes through a full range of Advanced Software solutions and Advanced Technologies systems. As a leading logistics service provider, we are excited for our growth and commitment to customizing global logistics solutions.

We are searching for Project Accountant who will serve as a key financial partner to our project management and operations teams, and who will play an active role in our ERP implementation. Build your career in an innovative, growing company by developing a working knowledge of SAVOYE systems and supporting our clients.

Job Summary

The Project Accountant is a critical finance role reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, with significant day-to-day interaction with project managers, operations leaders, and other members of the Accounting team. This position is responsible for the financial integrity of SNA's project portfolio โ€” tracking costs against budgets, supporting accurate and timely revenue recognition, and providing project managers with the financial visibility they need to manage margin performance throughout the project lifecycle.

As we are in an exciting period of growth and operational evolution, including an ERP platform migration to Epicor Kinetic, the Project Accountant will serve as a core internal team member on SNA's ERP migration to Epicor Kinetic, working alongside the Director of Finance and other key team members to configure, validate, and adopt new system workflows. This is a high-visibility role with a defined path toward broader financial leadership responsibility.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 3โ€“5 years of progressive accounting experience, with meaningful exposure to project accounting, job costing, or cost accounting in a project-based or construction/integration business environment.
  • Working knowledge of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and WIP accounting.
  • Experience with ERP systems in a finance or accounting capacity; demonstrated ability to work within and extract data from an ERP environment.
  • Strong Excel skills, including financial modeling, pivot tables, and the ability to build and maintain project cost tracking tools.
  • High attention to detail and comfort managing multiple active projects simultaneously with competing deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills โ€“ this role requires building credibility with project managers and operations leaders, not just finance and accounting teammates.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment with limited supervision.

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior involvement in an ERP implementation or system migration, particularly in a project accounting or finance configuration role.
  • Familiarity with Epicor Kinetic or similar project-centric ERP platforms (e.g., IFS, NetSuite, MS Dynamics BC).
  • Experience with multi-state sales tax compliance and/or cross-border (U.S./Canada) tax considerations.
  • Exposure to board-level or executive financial reporting.
  • Experience in material handling, logistics automation, systems integration, engineering-to-order, or heavy construction business.

Essential Job Functions

Project Accounting & Cost Management

  • Monitor and maintain financial records for all active projects, including budget-to-actual cost tracking, cost-at-completion forecasting, and margin analysis at the project level.
  • Partner closely with project managers to review project cost performance, identify budget variances, and support proactive corrective action on at-risk projects.
  • Support the monthly revenue recognition process (percentage-of-completion / cost-to-cost method) in accordance with GAAP including the preparation and review of POC calculations and related journal entries.
  • Analyze project labor costs, subcontractor spending, material costs, and overhead allocations; flag variances and facilitate resolution with the relevant project or operations stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation of project financial reporting for internal stakeholders, including project margin summaries, cost forecasts, and board-level financial inputs.
  • Maintain and audit project budgets in the ERP system, ensuring accuracy of project setup, cost code structures, and phase-level cost tracking.
  • Support change order financial analysis โ€” assessing cost impact, margin analysis, and appropriate revenue recognition treatment.

Month-End Close & General Accounting

  • Actively participate in the monthly close process, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and project-related accruals.
  • Prepare and review WIP schedules (overbillings and under billings) and ensure accurate balance sheet classification of project-related assets and liabilities.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with GAAP.
  • Support multi-state sales tax compliance, including reviewing project taxability and assisting with monthly sales tax filings.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests, including preparation of project cost documentation and schedules.

ERP Implementation (Epicor Kinetic)

  • Serve as a core member of SNA's internal Epicor Kinetic implementation team, representing finance and project accounting interests throughout the configuration, testing, and go-live process.
  • Work with Epicor implementation consultants to validate project accounting configuration โ€” including WBS structure, cost code setup, revenue recognition methods, and period close workflows.
  • Support data migration efforts, including review and reconciliation of historical project cost data being transitioned to the new system.
  • Assist in developing and documenting new ERP-based workflows for project cost tracking, POC calculation, and financial reporting.
  • Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) for project accounting and financial reporting modules.
  • Support end-user training and adoption within the finance team post go-live.

Working Conditions

  • Most tasks, projects, and communication with clients, team members, and Managers will be completed using a telephone, microphone, computer, and video technology.
  • Long periods of speaking, sitting, standing, typing, and may be required.
  • Although this is a full-time, Exempt position (40 hours per week), extended hours and evenings may be required based on client needs.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The company is not able to provide sponsorship for employment visas.

Location

  • Located at our Savoye HQ in Aurora, IL
  • The work schedule is Hybridโ€”four days in the office and one day remote. At times business needs may demand your presence to be in the office every day.

Benefits

  • This is a full time, salaried, exempt position. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package (see below):
  • 401(k) with company match

  • Health, Dental, and Vision insurance offered by BCBS. Offer multiple HSA and PPO options, two dental options, and Vision benefit.
