As a life underwriting manager with Progressive Life, you’ll lead a team of underwriters responsible for supporting the delivery of our life insurance products. In this role, you’ll serve as a resource for complex underwriting decisions while overseeing day-to-day operations, including coaching and development, reviewing approvals and audit results, and supporting underwriting guidelines and best practices. You’ll partner closely with Product, Analytics, Compliance, Legal and other business partners to support underwriting strategy, operational performance, and continuous improvement initiatives. As the organization continues to grow, you’ll play a key role in developing talent, enhancing underwriting capabilities, and helping shape the future of the underwriting function.

Progressive Life began within Level20, Progressive’s growth incubator, where we built a term life insurance product and business from the ground up. After a successful launch and early growth, we’ve spun out into the Strategy group, now focused on scaling our products, capabilities, and impact. You’ll be joining the organization at an exciting stage of growth as the team continues to building and expanding products, capabilities and delivery practices.

This is a hybrid role in downtown Cleveland, OH (Office Location: 800 W St Clair Ave STE 200, Cleveland, OH 44113) with free parking. Work-from-home days are possible for this position (Monday and Friday). We will be relocating to the Progressive headquarters campus (300 North Commons Blvd, Mayfield Village, Ohio 44143) later this year.

  • If you live within 45 miles: this will be a hybrid role. You’ll work in our office location Tuesday – Thursday and you’ll have the option to work remotely Monday and Friday.
  • If you live more than 45 miles away: this will be a hybrid role. You may work remotely except you’ll work in our office location every 4-6 weeks, Tuesday – Thursday. You may travel on Monday and Friday as necessary.

Must-have qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years life insurance underwriting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership, mentoring, coaching, or supervisory role
  • {OR} Bachelor's degree or higher in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of life insurance underwriting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership, mentoring, coaching, or supervisory role

Preferred skills

  • Experience underwriting term life, whole life, universal life, or other life insurance products within an automated underwriting environment
  • Knowledge of prescription database scoring, fraud protection tools, MIB, and electronic health records
  • FALU and/or FLMI designation
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to coach and mentor others, drive consistency in decision-making, and team performance, and develop underwriting guidelines, best practices, and operational standards
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguity within an evolving business environment; strong collaboration and relationship-building skills

Compensation

  • $120,000 - $160,000/year
  • Gainshare annual cash incentive payment up to 40% of your eligible earnings based on company performance
