What does a programs manager do?

A Programs Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating multiple projects or initiatives within an organization. They ensure that these programs align with the company’s strategic goals, manage resources, set timelines, and track progress. Programs Managers work closely with project managers and team members, addressing any issues that arise and ensuring that deliverables are met on time and within budget. Their role often involves communicating with stakeholders, developing program strategies, and measuring the overall success of the programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programs manager?

To thrive as a Programs Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and often a bachelor’s degree in business, management, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, as well as certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2, is highly valuable. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Programs Managers motivate teams and coordinate across departments. These skills ensure effective execution of programs, alignment with organizational goals, and the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.

They facilitate regular meetings, set clear milestones, and ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Effective Programs Managers are proactive in identifying potential bottlenecks and work closely with stakeholders to resolve issues quickly. This collaborative approach not only helps in delivering successful outcomes but also fosters a culture of open communication and teamwork across the organization.

This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic, highly organized program leader who knows how to bring complex initiatives together, keep stakeholders aligned, anticipate risks, and drive programs from initial planning through successful delivery.

In this role, you'll have visibility across multiple projects and work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure priorities, timelines, budgets, and outcomes stay on track. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable developing a high-level program roadmap and digging into the details needed to remove obstacles and keep execution moving.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and orchestrate multiple interconnected projects to achieve broader program objectives.
  • Develop and manage program roadmaps, schedules, milestones, dependencies, and deliverables from inception through completion.
  • Establish clear success metrics and regularly communicate program status, progress, risks, and development issues.
  • Identify potential risks and roadblocks early, develop mitigation strategies, and drive issues through resolution.
  • Coordinate across project teams to ensure priorities, resources, timelines, and dependencies remain aligned.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to establish expectations, maintain engagement, and drive stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Build, monitor, and manage program budgets while identifying opportunities to improve cost, performance, and delivery timelines.
  • Facilitate effective communication across teams, ensuring stakeholders have visibility into decisions, priorities, and program progress.
  • Continuously evaluate processes and identify opportunities to improve program efficiency and execution.
  • Stay informed of business trends, internal processes, organizational priorities, and changing conditions that could impact individual projects or the overall program.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Proven experience managing complex programs involving multiple simultaneous projects and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong program and project management skills, including roadmap development, scheduling, dependency management, risk mitigation, and status reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and coordinate stakeholders across different teams and levels of an organization.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets, program metrics, timelines, and performance goals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify risks before they become roadblocks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly when translating complex program information into clear updates for stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, evolving environment while maintaining organization and attention to detail.
  • A continuous-improvement mindset with a track record of finding ways to improve efficiency, cost, performance, and delivery.

Why This Opportunity?

This 8-month remote U.S. contract offers the opportunity to take ownership of highly visible, cross-functional programs while partnering with teams reporting into Seattle. If you enjoy bringing structure to complexity, aligning diverse stakeholders, and turning strategic goals into measurable results, this could be an exciting next assignment.
