Winter: Youth Recreation Programs Intern

Assignment:

30 - 40 hours per week, 10-14 weeks

October through December or January through March

Flexible schedule including some evening and weekends.

Salary:

Starting at $15.84 per hour

Not medical or dental benefit eligible.

Primary Objective of Internship:

Gain valuable hands-on experience in planning, supervising, implementing, and evaluating a variety of youth recreation programs, including after-school classes, Rec Basketball Leagues, Ski & Snowboard Club, and large community events. Orientation, training, and mentoring are provided.

  • Work with a variety of grades and age groups (E-12).

  • Develop leadership and management skills.

  • Develop public relations and customer service skills.

  • Gain experience working in a collaborative environment.

  • Apply coursework and theory in a large, fast-paced, and comprehensive recreation department.

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Participate in program management, including program development, scheduling, budgeting, marketing, registration, facilities management, and staffing.

  • Assist in supervising and providing guidance for participants in seasonal youth programs and special events.

  • Participate in planning, preparation, and leading age-appropriate activities and staff trainings.

  • Establish positive and friendly relationships with participants and families.

  • Assist in the supervision and training of program staff.

  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.

  • Participate in a mock interview at the conclusion of the internship.

Requirements:

  • Pursuing a B.A. or B.S. in recreation, youth development, sports management, leisure studies, community education, or a related field at an accredited college or university (juniors and seniors preferred).

  • Successful experience in youth recreation and a passion for working with youth.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills; ability to relate well to both children and adults and thrive in a team setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.

  • Evidence of ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.

  • Proven record of punctuality and responsibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

  • Must have a reliable form of transportation.

  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid (or willingness to become certified upon hire; training provided).
