Programming Intern information

What do programming interns do?

Programming Interns typically support ongoing development projects by writing and testing code, fixing bugs, and assisting with documentation. You may be assigned to work on specific modules, perform code reviews, or help automate repetitive tasks under the guidance of senior developers. Interns often participate in team meetings, collaborate closely with other interns and full-time engineers, and gain exposure to version control systems and agile workflows. These experiences are designed to help you build practical skills while contributing meaningfully to the team's goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programming intern?

To thrive as a Programming Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms, often gained through coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic debugging tools, and at least one programming language such as Python, Java, or C++ is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and the ability to communicate effectively within a team help interns stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial for quickly adapting to real-world projects, collaborating with colleagues, and making meaningful contributions during the internship.

Job description

Are you interested in being part of an innovative team that supports Westinghouse's mission to provide clean energy solutions?  At Westinghouse, innovation is in our DNA.  We are creative. We think differently.  This goes beyond our technical applications and products. We must incorporate innovation into all aspects of our business to drive greater efficiency, create greater growth and strengthen our culture.

Westinghouse is committed to delivering innovative nuclear energy solutions by leveraging our global insights, CANDU expertise, collaborative mindset, and best-in-class technology. We are proud to play a key role in accelerating Canada's energy sustainability and achieving its net-zero goals and we recognize that our employees are our most valuable asset when it comes to achieving that goal.

About the role:

Westinghouse Electric Canada is a leading supplier of custom equipment, process systems and engineering consultant services for the Nuclear industry in Canada. You will join an innovative team that supports Westinghouse's mission to provide clean energy solutions.

Specifically, as an Electrical Engineering Intern, you will work on a variety of technical assignments. These assignments relate to the design, drafting, testing, and implementation of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems projects. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will contribute to capital, expense, and development projects supporting the nuclear industry. This internship offers hands-on experience with electrical schematics, software development, component selection, manufacturing support, and testing activities. This is a 4-month internship beginning in May 2027.

You will report to the Manager, Aux. Elec. Sys. & Equipment and be assigned to our Kitchener, Ontario, location. This position will be offered as a hybrid role. Employees working in hybrid roles are expected to work onsite at our Kitchener office 2 days per week.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and optimize control systems and software related to electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Develop electrical schematics, manufacturing drawings, and technical documentation in accordance with Westinghouse quality standards.

  • Support the development, assembly, testing, and commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems to ensure compliance with design specifications.

  • Identify and evaluate electro-mechanical components, prepare component specifications and purchasing requests, and interface with suppliers and vendors.

  • Help with software development, test procedure creation, and operation of final tooling systems at customer facilities.

Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Completion of at least the second year of an Electrical Engineering program with a minimum GPA of 75%, or a recent graduate of an Electrical Engineering program.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or similar electrical design and drafting software.

  • Knowledge of electrical systems, electronic equipment, computer hardware, and software development principles.

  • We consider experience developing technical drawings, schematics, or engineering design documentation through coursework, internships, student teams, or personal projects an asset.

We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The hourly pay range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $27.65 per hour.

This posting is for an existing vacancy and reflects an immediate hiring need.
