ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Youth Recreation Coordinator will lead the planning, management, and implementation of all Beacon youth programming. Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Youth Recreation Coordinator will work in close partnership with Beacon leadership to design and deliver high-quality programming for youth-particularly middle and high school participants-aligned with Positive Youth Development principles.
This role will support program development, outreach and recruitment, staff coordination, and key community partnerships, including collaboration with local schools. The Youth Recreation Coordinator is responsible for fostering a brave, inclusive space where youth feel a sense of belonging, ownership, and motivation to participate. The impact and effectiveness of youth programming are actively monitored and measured to inform continuous improvement. The Youth Recreation Coordinator, Beacon will:
Youth Engagement & Programming
โ€ข Actively recruit and retain youth participants through outreach, relationship-building, and engaging program design.
โ€ข Create a welcoming, affirming, and brave space where youth feel safe to express themselves, explore interests, and build identity and confidence.
โ€ข Design and facilitate intentional, age-appropriate programming that reflects youth interests and promotes leadership, teamwork, skill-building, and personal growth.
โ€ข Incorporate sports, recreation, enrichment, and project-based activities that align with monthly themes, program goals, and DYCD expectations.
โ€ข Promote physical literacy, healthy habits, and lifelong engagement in wellness and movement.
โ€ข Serve as a consistent, positive role model by actively participating in programming and modeling respectful communication, accountability, and leadership.
โ€ข Support the social-emotional development of youth through structured mentorship, group dialogue, and relationship-based engagement.
โ€ข Address behavioral, social, or medical incidents calmly and professionally, using developmentally appropriate behavior management strategies aligned with program policies.
Team Collaboration & Partnerships
โ€ข Work collaboratively with the Beacon Leadership and program staff to ensure cohesive youth programming across schedules and age groups.
โ€ข Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding program progress, participant engagement, challenges, and successes.
โ€ข Support the planning and execution of special events, trips, service projects, and leadership opportunities for participants.
โ€ข Chaperone and supervise youth during trips and off-site activities, ensuring safety and adherence to all policies.
โ€ข Partner with community organizations and vendors to enhance program offerings and expand access to enrichment, career exposure, and leadership opportunities.
โ€ข Participate in program planning by identifying service gaps and proposing strategies that reflect community needs and youth voice.
Operations & Compliance
โ€ข Maintain accurate daily attendance, enrollment, and participation records in accordance with DYCD requirements.
โ€ข Complete and submit required documentation, including lesson plans, recruitment logs, incident reports, injury reports, and fire drill documentation, etc., within required timelines.
โ€ข Follow all emergency procedures, safety protocols, and mandated reporting requirements.
โ€ข Maintain, distribute, and secure program equipment and materials; report missing or damaged items promptly.
โ€ข Support overall site operations by adhering to schedules, communication protocols, and professional expectations.
COMPETENCIES
โ€ข Must have a genuine love for working with youth and must want to serve as a mentor to young people.
โ€ข Two years of experience working with youth in after-school, school-based, camp, or community settings.
โ€ข Experience in sports, recreation, enrichment, or youth leadership preferred
โ€ข Strong youth facilitation, engagement, and relationship building skills.
โ€ข Ability to lead groups, manage behavior constructively, and create inclusive environments.
โ€ข Organized, dependable, and able to balance programming, supervision, and documentation.
โ€ข Genuine passion for mentoring young people and working collaboratively with families and staff.
โ€ข Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or equivalent (HSE/GED) required. College credits preferred.
