What is a programmer writer?

A programmer writer is a professional who combines programming skills with technical writing to create clear documentation, tutorials, and guides for software development. They often have knowledge of coding languages, development tools, and writing standards to communicate complex technical concepts effectively.

Is technical writing replaced by AI?

Technical writing, including roles like programmer writers, involves creating clear and accurate documentation that often requires understanding complex concepts and audience needs. While AI tools can assist with drafting and editing, they do not fully replace the critical thinking, expertise, and contextual judgment that human technical writers provide. Therefore, AI is a supplement rather than a complete replacement in technical writing jobs.

What is a Programmer Writer job?

A Programmer Writer creates technical documentation, tutorials, and code samples to help developers understand and use software, APIs, or development tools. They bridge the gap between software engineers and end users by translating complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and useful content. This role requires strong writing skills, coding experience, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

How much do tech writers get paid?

Technical writers, including programmer writers, typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced writers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in tech-heavy environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Programmer Writers, and how can they overcome them?

One of the main challenges Programmer Writers face is translating highly technical information into clear, accessible documentation for various audiences with differing technical backgrounds. They must continuously keep up with rapidly evolving technologies and ensure their documentation stays current. Collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and QA teams is essential to gather accurate information and clarify technical details. Building strong relationships with subject matter experts and actively engaging in team communication can help overcome these challenges and produce high-quality documentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Programmer Writer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Programmer Writer, you need strong programming knowledge, excellent writing skills, and an understanding of software development practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with documentation tools like Markdown, Sphinx, or DITA, and experience with code repositories such as Git, are commonly expected, while certifications in technical writing can be beneficial. Outstanding attention to detail, the ability to explain complex ideas simply, and effective collaboration with engineering teams help set top candidates apart. These competencies are essential for producing accurate, user-friendly documentation that bridges the gap between developers and end-users.

Job description

About Topsort

At Topsort, we believe in the mission of democratizing the secret technologies of the walled gardens and creating a privacy-first cookie-free world of clean advertising with modern tech, friendly products, and AI. We believe in making advertising intuitive, intelligent, and genuinely cool, without any of the creepy ads or cookie-obsession (well, maybe just the chocolate ones). In a rapidly changing industry, we're on a mission to democratize monetization access for all and ensure that advertising doesn't leave any brand or seller feeling confused or overwhelmed

Today, Topsort has 6 major hubs worldwide, and employees in 13+ countries, including Menlo Park, Boston, Santiago Chile, Sao Paulo Brazil, Barcelona Spain, and Sydney Australia. We are a truly global company that was born in the pandemic that's had rapid growth since out of a genius product, a customer-first mentality, and a hardworking team of talented individuals. Since our founding in 2021, we've gained customers in retail, marketplaces, and delivery apps in 40+ countries and quickly approaching the #1 position in the industry.

Do you enjoy a fast-paced environment? Do you like seeing your work create real-time impact, being part of a rocket ship from the very beginning? Let's do the unimaginable - let's make ads clean and cool again, with AI and modern technology.

Why Topsort? Why now?

Topsort is changing the way Retail Media works. By joining our scaling team, you'll feel your impact from day 1. The processes and messaging you build today will be a critical part of our foundation as we accelerate toward 200 Topsorters worldwide, and your innovations will leave a lasting mark on the industry, as a whole. Retail Media is on the verge of a new era, and Topsort is gathering the ecosystem together to shape a brighter future. Joining us now, you'll work directly alongside our co-founders and founding members to bring on Retail Media 3.0. If you're looking to define your career as something greater than yourself, come scale with us.

What it's like to work at Topsort

At Topsort, we communicate openly and move fast. We say things as they are, challenge each other early, and embrace feedback with curiosity-it's how we build better, faster. Every experiment has a purpose, and every outcome helps us make the next decision smarter. There's no single formula for success here; we find what works, improve it, and scale it.

We're collaborative internally and competitive externally-never the other way around. The pace is quick, sometimes a 100-mph kind of fast, and that's what keeps it exciting. We act with intent, lift each other up, and turn bold ideas into real results. No endless meetings here-if it can be done today, it gets done today.

What This Role Is Like

This is not a traditional content marketing role, nor is it purely technical documentation.ย You'll become deeply embedded in the business, working closely with product managers, engineers, GTM team, and company leadership to help communicate ideas clearly and effectively. One day you might be simplifying a technical product concept for customers. The next, you could beย  writing product documentation, or developing thought leadership content around the future of commerce and AI.

The strong candidates are naturally curious, strong listeners, and exceptional translators of complexity.

You Will:

  • Write and maintain product documentation, guides, FAQs, and knowledge base content.
  • Turn technical concepts into clear, customer-friendly explanations.
  • Create sales enablement materials, one-pagers, presentations, case studies, and customer-facing content.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Commercial teams to document new features and capabilities.
  • Help shape company messaging, positioning, and storytelling across multiple audiences.
  • Support thought leadership content, articles, and executive communications.
  • Interview subject matter experts and transform conversations into structured, polished content.
  • Edit and improve existing documentation and content for clarity, consistency, and quality.
  • Build scalable content systems rather than creating one-off documents.

What we think you will be successful

  • Bachelor or Master degrees in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Business, Engineering, or a related field
  • Exceptional written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and explain complex technical concepts.
  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn unfamiliar subjects quickly.
  • Experience writing across multiple formats, including documentation, articles, presentations, reports, and customer-facing content.
  • Strong information-gathering skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-moving startup environment with limited direction.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a high quality bar for written work.
  • Comfort receiving feedback and iterating quickly.
  • Experience working with AI tools as part of your writing workflow.
  • Background in technical writing, product marketing, journalism, consulting, or strategic communications is plus.
  • Portfolio demonstrating a range of writing styles and formats.

What We Value

At Topsort, we seek professionals who embody the following qualities to drive our mission forward:

  • Deep dive into details:ย Professionals who are not content with superficial answers and dive deeply into the details to uncover root causes and optimal solutions.
  • Team first:ย A low need for individual recognition, always prioritizing collective results over personal credit.
  • You thrive with ambiguity:ย Exceptional ability to tackle open-ended problems in unstructured environments, turning chaos into structured innovation.
  • Adaptability:ย Willingness to learn, mentor, lead, and follow as the situation demands, fostering growth at all levels.
  • Urgency:ย A disproportionate sense of urgency in execution, while keeping scalability and the creation of replicable processes in mind to ensure long-term success.
  • Curiosity:ย Genuinely curious individuals who can quickly learn difficult concepts and apply them effectively.
