What is a programmer trainee?

Programmer Trainees are entry-level professionals who are learning the fundamentals of programming and software development, typically as part of a structured training program within a company. They work under the supervision of experienced developers, assisting with coding, debugging, testing, and documentation tasks while gaining practical experience. The role is designed to help them develop technical skills, understand software development processes, and prepare for more advanced programming positions.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on as a programmer trainee?

As a Programmer Trainee, you will typically start by assisting with coding, debugging, and testing tasks under the guidance of more experienced developers. You'll often work on smaller modules or features within larger projects and may be tasked with maintaining documentation, fixing bugs, or writing unit tests. Collaboration with team members such as senior programmers, testers, and project managers is common, providing valuable exposure to the software development lifecycle. This hands-on involvement helps you build foundational technical skills and prepares you for more complex responsibilities as you grow in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programmer trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Programmer Trainee, you need a basic understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and at least a relevant degree or coursework in computer science or IT. Familiarity with code editors, version control systems like Git, and debugging tools is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help you adapt quickly and collaborate with mentors and peers. These skills and qualities are essential for building a solid programming foundation, contributing effectively to projects, and progressing in a technical career.

Job description

Graduate / Trainee Recruitment Consultant – Tampa, FL

$45,000 base salary | $50,000 after training | Uncapped commission

Looking to kick-start a career where your hard work directly impacts your earnings and progression?

We’re hiring Graduate / Trainee Recruitment Consultants to join a growing international recruitment business in Tampa, Florida, with an September 2026 start.

This is a particularly exciting time to join. The company already has an established international presence and is now investing heavily in its US operation, with expansion across technology, construction, engineering and energy/renewables.

Why join now?

The Tampa office is still in its early stages, with plans to grow to around 15 people by the end of the year.

So rather than joining a huge, established sales floor where you can easily get lost in the crowd, you’ll have the chance to become part of the team as it grows.

You’ll get the backing, systems and training of an established international business, combined with the atmosphere and opportunity you’d expect from a rapidly scaling office.

The package

  • $45,000 starting salary
  • $50,000 following successful completion of training
  • Uncapped commission from day one
  • Clear, performance-led earning structure
  • Your progression and earning potential are driven by your results

What will you be doing?

As a Recruitment Consultant, you’ll develop relationships with both businesses and candidates across a range of growing markets.

Your training will cover everything from:

  • Business development and winning new clients
  • Managing existing accounts
  • Candidate sourcing and interviewing
  • Building long-term relationships
  • Negotiating offers and closing deals

Recruitment is competitive and fast-moving, so this is a role for someone who enjoys a challenge, wants to develop commercially and is motivated by tangible results.

Development & progression

You won’t be expected to learn everything overnight.

A dedicated internal Learning & Development team provides structured onboarding, ongoing training, regular feedback and clear development milestones.

There’s also a genuine long-term career path, with progression available through to Director level and a strong focus on developing talent internally.

Who are we looking for?

You don’t need years of recruitment experience.

Around 12 months of commercial experience would be ideal, particularly if you’ve worked in:

• Sales

• Events

• Logistics

• Insurance

• Customer or client-facing environments

Most importantly, you’ll need confidence, resilience, commercial awareness and the ambition to succeed.

If you’re competitive, personable and excited by the idea of building a career in a high-growth environment, we’d like to hear from you.

And outside the role...

There’s plenty happening beyond the day-to-day:

  • 12pm finish every Friday
  • Two company trips each year
  • Social, energetic office culture
  • Central Tampa location
  • Opportunity to have a visible impact as the team expands
  • This is an opportunity to get in early with a business that has already proven itself internationally — and play a meaningful role in its next phase of US growth.

    Start date: September 2026
