About the Role


Design Works Engineering is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to contribute significantly to the ongoing expansion of our Edmonton office. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional eager to take on a leadership position within our electrical team. The successful candidate will be committed to delivering high-quality electrical designs while providing technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership to a growing group of professionals.


The Senior Electrical Engineer will act as a technical authority and project leader, overseeing complex building and subdivision projects from concept through construction. You will work closely with clients, internal teams, and external stakeholders to deliver practical, coordinated, and costeffective electrical systems that meet both code requirements and realworld construction needs.


We are seeking candidates with 8+ years of consulting experience, strong building design expertise, and the confidence to lead projects, guide junior staff, and contribute to team development and operational excellence.


What You'll Do


Technical Leadership & Project Delivery

  • Serve as the technical lead for building and subdivision electrical projects, ensuring quality, consistency, and code compliance.
  • Oversee and review electrical designs, calculations, and documentation prepared by junior staff.
  • Provide technical guidance and problemsolving support throughout the project lifecycle.


Building Electrical Design

  • Lead the design of electrical systems for commercial, residential, industrial, hospitality, institutional, and mixeduse buildings.
  • Perform and review load calculations, shortcircuit and coordination studies, and system sizing.
  • Design lighting layouts, lighting control systems, and photometric studies.
  • Lead the design of fire alarm, life safety, emergency, and standby power systems (UPS and generators).
  • Prepare grounding, bonding, heat trace, and communications system designs.


Municipal & Subdivision Electrical Design

  • Lead the design of low and mediumvoltage distribution systems for subdivisions and large land development projects.
  • Oversee streetlighting, distribution pathways, and communications network layouts.
  • Coordinate with the City of Edmonton, EPCOR, telecom providers, and other authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Contribute to feasibility studies, servicing reviews, and electrical planning for new communities.


Coordination, QA/QC & Documentation

  • Review and stamp electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Ensure deliverables meet internal QA/QC standards and client expectations.
  • Coordinate closely with civil, structural, mechanical, and architectural teams to deliver integrated designs.
  • Support energy audits, feasibility studies, and code compliance reviews.


Construction & Client Support

  • Provide senior technical support during construction, including shop drawing reviews, RFIs, and site visits.
  • Lead client meetings and act as a trusted technical advisor.
  • Deliver practical, buildable solutions aligned with project budgets and schedules.


Mentorship & Team Development

  • Mentor and support junior designers and EITs through technical guidance, review, and coaching.
  • Contribute to building and strengthening the Edmonton electrical team.
  • Support continuous improvement of electrical design standards, tools, and processes.


What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered and in good standing with APEGA.
  • 5-10+ years of consulting electrical engineering experience, with strong building design expertise.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and provide technical oversight.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Canadian Electrical Code (CEC)
    • Alberta Building Code
    • Municipal standards, particularly City of Edmonton and EPCOR requirements
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit and lighting calculation software experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Power distribution systems
    • Fire alarm and life safety systems
    • Lighting and photometric design
    • Low, medium, and highvoltage systems
    • Subdivision electrical and communications design
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A practical, constructionfocused mindset with strong judgment and problemsolving ability.
