Job description

Position Summary The PLC Programmer position is responsible for the design, configuration and integration of thermal processing control systems for composites manufacturing consisting of Injection, Compression, Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), and Autoclave operations.

Given that a PLC is the heart of most modern automation systems, the position of PLC Programmer will provide all necessary support for the facility related to maintaining and adapting existing PLC systems. This position must also specify, design, program, and commission new PLC systems for the facility. Included in these systems will be a variety of equipment, including variable frequency drives, servo drives, control and communications networks, safety functions, and various other electrical hardware and their related software. The successful candidate must be detail-oriented, able to work with limited supervision, and possess strong communications skills to effectively communicate with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and equipment suppliers.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive PLC programming and integration services to streamline operations and elevate efficiency of new and legacy equipment.
  • Create and read logic and flow diagrams for program design, programming, simulation, testing and start-up. Develop system documentation for new and existing systems.
  • Selection and configuration of other automation devices, such as temperature controllers, hydraulic systems, safety systems, and PLC’s for automation/control.
  • Modify existing programs for specific customer requirements.
  • Provide guidance to Engineering and Maintenance in programming, repair, installation and maintenance of PLC systems.
  • Update changes made to controls electronically.
  • Complete work orders when not actively programming.

Minimum Qualifications 

Required: Associate's Degree or 5+ years of equivalent experience

Preferred: Bachelor's Degree or 5+ years of equivalent experience

Field of Study/Area of Experience: 5+ years of experience in PLC Programming

  • Knowledge of safety protocols with ability to extend safety provisions within legacy configurations as needed.
  • 5 + years of experience in PLC-based system design and implementation required.
  • A solid background of safely working with low-voltage electrical power design and control.
  • Proficiency with multiple manufacturers’ automation hardware and software, including, but not limited to, Allen Bradley, Watlow, Specview, Ignition & SCADA development, with consideration for future scalability.
  • Well versed in ladder logic programming, including industry standards for program development.
  • Strong understanding of HMI design and programming, primarily Allen-Bradley.
  • A general understanding of instrumentation techniques, equipment, and signal wiring will be necessary.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes preferred, to include control of thermal, pressure, and machining processes.
  • Experience reading and modifying electrical control schematics.
  • Experience reading P&ID diagrams.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols with ability to extend safety provisions within legacy configurations as needed.
  • An ability to problem-solve, serve as an advisor, and develop operating procedures.

Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. Work may be performed in an office or warehouse environment. Typically requires the ability to spend 66%+ hours each work day doing the following activities: stand for extended periods of time, walk, bend, stoop, or climb.  May have possible exposure to dust, and may require the ability to lift and/or push up to 50 pounds 33% - 66% of the time.
