What is a programmer designer?

A Programmer Designer is a professional who combines skills in software development and design to create functional and visually appealing software applications or systems. They are responsible for both writing code and designing user interfaces, ensuring that applications are efficient, user-friendly, and meet project requirements. This role often requires proficiency in programming languages, user experience (UX) principles, and collaboration with other team members such as developers and designers. Programmer Designers play a key role in bridging the gap between technical functionality and aesthetic usability.

How do programmer designers typically balance coding tasks with design responsibilities in their daily workflow?

Programmer Designers often split their time between developing software solutions and designing user interfaces or system architectures. This dual responsibility requires effective time management, as they may need to switch focus between writing code, creating design prototypes, and collaborating with both developers and designers. Clear communication and regular check-ins with team members help ensure alignment on project goals and deadlines. Adopting agile methodologies and using collaborative tools can further streamline the balance between programming and design tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programmer designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Programmer Designer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages, software design principles, and user interface design, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Proficiency in tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), design software (e.g., Adobe XD or Figma), and integrated development environments (IDEs) is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective communication set outstanding Programmer Designers apart. These skills are crucial for creating efficient, user-friendly software solutions that meet client requirements and industry standards.

Job description

Shoreline Connected is looking for an experienced Lutron Systems Designer / Programmer to join our team.

Weโ€™re a luxury residential AV, lighting control, shading, and smart home integration company based in Westhampton Beach, NY, and weโ€™re looking for someone who can take technical ownership of our Lutron projects from design through completion.

The ideal candidate has strong experience with Lutron HomeWorks, system design/engineering, programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and construction documentation. Experience with HomeWorks QSX, RadioRA 3, Ketra, and Lutron shading systems is a big plus.

This position would be involved with things like:

* Reviewing architectural, electrical, lighting, and shade plans

* Designing and engineering Lutron systems

* Developing equipment lists, load schedules, keypad schedules, risers, and wiring documentation

* Programming and commissioning HomeWorks systems

* Supporting technicians and troubleshooting field issues

* Coordinating with electricians, builders, designers, architects, and our internal project team

* Maintaining clean project files, backups, and as-built documentation

We are very open to the right person working fully remote. We would also consider someone who is primarily remote but able to occasionally visit our Westhampton Beach showroom or Hamptons-area jobsites for important meetings, surveys, commissioning, or more complex projects.

This could be a great fit for an experienced Lutron programmer, designer, engineer, or integrator who enjoys the technical side of projects and wants to work with a growing company doing high-end residential work.

Compensation will depend on experience, skill set, and the final structure of the role.
