Job description

The Controls Engineer will support the design, implementation, and commissioning of control systems for various projects and support the development and release of new products.
This role requires a deep understanding of safety standards and their application. The successful candidate will lead controls related development projects, ensure compliance with international safety regulations, and oversee the commissioning of systems with a focus on reliability and fail-safe operation.

YOUR CHALLENGE: 


  • Drive the controls improvement development project forward by establishing project delivery goals and reporting on their progress. 
  • Engineering lead on controls related development projects carrying the projects through the Controls Development Process, selecting and NPI partner, and driving through to completion. 
  • Provide SME support on technical project challenges, summarizing actions and distributing tasks 
  • Lead product NPI testing and validation at both ProSlide’s research and development centre and project commissionings. 
  • Develop a deep understanding and application of relevant design codes and standards to ensure all control systems comply with regulatory requirements and industry best practices. Stay updated on changes in standards by active participation in standard maintenance or compliance matrix. 
  • Controls Programming: Program and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems with a focus on safety-critical applications. Expertise in Rockwell (RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000) and Siemens (STEP 7, TIA Portal) environments is essential. 
  • Safety and Risk Management: Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify potential hazards and implement robust safety measures. Develop and implement redundant safety systems and emergency protocols to protect the public and operators. 
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all control systems comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. Stay current with changes in safety regulations and integrate them into system designs to maintain compliance and enhance safety. 
  • Safety System Validation: Lead the validation of safety-critical systems through rigorous Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and on-site commissioning. Ensure all systems perform to specification under all operating conditions, including failure scenarios. 
  • Network Communication & Security: Design and secure robust communication networks that facilitate reliable data exchange between control system components. Troubleshoot and optimize network configurations, ensuring systems are protected from cybersecurity threats. 
  • Documentation & Standards Compliance: Develop detailed controls development documentation, including Theory of Operations (TOO), Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Technical Specifications, and user manuals. Ensure all documents are precise and meet quality standards. 
  • Training & Knowledge Transfer: Provide advanced training to operators, maintenance personnel, and other stakeholders on the operation and maintenance of safety-critical control systems. Ensure trainees fully understand safety protocols and system functionalities to maintain operational safety. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Lead initiatives to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of control systems. Stay informed about the latest technological advancements and industry best practices, and apply this knowledge to improve system designs. 
  • Thoroughly review project-related documents such as Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) drawings, Electrical Layouts, and System Overviews to understand project requirements and ensure alignment with control systems specifications. 
  • Conduct both Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to validate the performance and functionality of control systems. Document test results and coordinate with applicable parties to resolve any issues identified. 
  • System Architecture Development: Design and develop control system architectures that prioritize modularity,
    safety and redundancy. Ensure systems meet the highest standards of reliability and fail-safe operation, particularly in public-facing environments. 


WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE: 


  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a closely related field.  
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in control systems engineering, particularly in public facing safety-critical environments such as amusement parks, transportation, or industrial automation. Proven experience in developing redundant safety systems and conducting engineering documentation. 
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in PLC programming (Rockwell and Siemens platforms), HMI design,
    and network communication protocols. 
  • Solid knowledge of safety standards (e.g., ASTM F24 (2291 / 2376), EN 13814, ISO 17842, NFPA 70, IEC 60364, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, ISO 13849) and experience with safety-critical systems. 
  • Certifications and Training: Professional Engineer (P.Eng), Functional Safety (TÜV), Rockwell (RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000), Siemens (STEP 7/TIA Portal),
    Certified Automation Professional (CAP), CMSE (certified Machine Safety Expert) 
  • Network & Security: Strong understanding of network communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP/IP) and network security best practices. Experience in designing and troubleshooting industrial networks. 
  • Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to ensuring system safety. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders. Strong team-oriented mentality with a proactive solutions mindset and a willingness to assist in any capacity. 
  • Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel internationally up to 20-30% of the time for commissioning, inspections, and training.
