Job Summary
The Director of Rural, Underserved, & Regional Medical Education (RURME) Operations analyzes business processes (work activities, workflows, procedures, roles, reporting relationships, etc.) to ensure the administrative, financial, personnel, and organizational functions related to rural, underserved, and regional medical education are strategically aligned with programmatic and institutional objectives. The Director of RURME Operations builds, monitors, and refines processes and manages daily logistics to support both scaling of infrastructure during periods of growth and program sustainability with established partners. The Director identifies areas to eliminate duplicative work, remove barriers to progress, and accelerate stronger integration across programs to ensure efficient operational workflows and comparability of student experiences across campuses. This role assists senior leadership and the Education Program Director in defining SFESOM goals and strategic plans for rural, underserved, and regional medical education in alignment with University of Utah and MD Program standards and priorities. The Director interfaces with staff, students, faculty, and leadership across the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine (SFESOM) to plan and efficiently achieve objectives. This role interfaces with state, regional, and global partners, including representatives of health care delivery systems, institutions of higher education, government entities, and accrediting bodies.
Responsibilities
Role Specific:
• Utilizes analysis models, such as process and strategy maps and organizational design methods, and evaluates cross-unit programs to guide strategy decisions for successful program implementation and continuity.
• Ensures rural, underserved, and regional medical education practices are consistent with vision and initiatives, foundational pillars, and metrics across the MD Program.
• As part of the regional campus start-up process, establishes workflows and directs all regional campus endeavors to support staffing efforts, facilities and contract management, budget oversight, and programmatic administrative duties; at steady state, provides ongoing guidance and direction to regional campus staff to ensure integration of strategic planning and operational excellence among all campuses.
• Directs all rural, underserved, and regional medical education operational efforts, including staff management and development, budget oversight, and strategic planning.
• Cultivates and maintains relationships with internal and external constituents, such as donors, preceptors, health systems, institutions of higher education, public agencies, legislative affairs, and interprofessional programs.
• Partners with senior leadership in strategic planning related to rural, underserved, and regional medical education; gathers, organizes, and presents information to communicate unit plans, vision, and direction and to facilitate collaboration across internal and external partners.
• Partners with senior leadership in legislative strategy and funding proposals, contract negotiations and legal document preparation, executive leadership engagement, monitoring and continuous quality improvement of business operations, and accreditation compliance.
• Directs efforts to ensure effective cross-collaboration of student-led clinic, longitudinal integrated clerkship and elective sites and operations; liaises with medical directors, faculty, staff, student leaders, and clinic leadership to ensure adequate preceptor resources, electronic health record access, clinic supplies, current affiliation agreements, and tracking of performance indicators.
• Supports faculty and staff on matters related to local, regional and international travel and risk management; ensures policy compliance and monitoring of international visitors.
• Participates in the interpretation of promissory note and gift agreement policies to ensure compliance.
• In collaboration with the Admissions Office, advises students and other constituents regarding the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).
• Partners with other units in the Dean's Office to support local, regional, and international travel of students.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Director, Administration Management
Provide leadership and direction for the department/school/college, supporting all aspects of administrative, financial, and workforce operations, as well as strategic planning. Develop and implement initiatives to advance operational efficiencies and effectiveness. Manage budgets and resource allocation to optimize performance and support the organizational strategic priorities. Monitor key performance indicators, evaluate operational efficiency, and implement continuous improvement initiatives to ensure the organization's success. Contribute to the development and execution of organization-wide strategies and goals. Partner with University HR to address workforce challenges and foster a positive work environment aligned with the university's mission and values.
Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 12 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 10 years of directly related work experience.
