What is program planning?

Program planning is the process of defining the goals, activities, resources, timeline, and evaluation methods for a specific project or initiative. It involves identifying the needs of the target audience, setting measurable objectives, designing activities and allocating resources, and creating a plan for implementation and assessment. Effective program planning helps organizations ensure that their programs are organized, efficient, and capable of achieving desired outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program planner?

To thrive as a Program Planner, you need strong organizational skills, project management expertise, and a background in business or related fields, often supported by a relevant degree. These competencies enable effective coordination, ensure program objectives are met, and help mitigate risks throughout the program lifecycle.

These challenges are typically addressed by maintaining clear communication channels, implementing robust project management tools, and holding regular cross-functional meetings to ensure alignment. Flexibility and strong organizational skills are essential, as program planners must frequently adapt to changing organizational goals and timelines while keeping the overall program objectives on track.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or bachelorโ€™s degree in Business, Program/Project Management, Logistics, Engineering Management, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting DHS, CBP, DoD, or other federal Government programs.
  • Experience in a Government contracting environment supporting PWS/SOW requirements, CDRLs, schedules, or other program-control requirements.
  • Experience with sustainment, logistics, operational-performance analysis, risk tracking, or management reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • This position is performed primarily in a professional office environment and requires regular in-office attendance during established work hours.
  • The employee will routinely collaborate in person and through approved communication systems with Program Management, Engineering, Field Service, Logistics, Contracts, Quality, Procurement, Finance, subcontractors, Government customers, and other program stakeholders.
  • The position requires extended periods of computer use and routine use of Microsoft Office, program-management applications, Government systems, collaboration tools, and other business software.
  • Occasional travel may be required to support customer meetings, Program Management Reviews, conferences, program reviews, field activities, or other program requirements.
