What is a program manager?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What does a program manager do?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges program managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

Job description

Program Manager

Full-Time  |  Winston-Salem, NC

About DDM Manufacturing

DDM Manufacturing is an AS9100D-certified, ITAR-registered precision manufacturing company serving aerospace, defense, powersports, and industrial markets. We combine precision CNC machining and vacuum forming under one roof, operating as a customer-centric contract manufacturer and supply chain solution provider capable of executing on prototype, production, and aftermarket support initiatives for customers who need a manufacturing partner they can build a long-term program around.

The Program Manager is key to connecting customer needs with our manufacturing execution.

Position Summary

The Program Manager serves as the primary point of contact and business owner for an assigned portfolio of customer accounts, with full accountability for revenue growth, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction within that portfolio. This role combines technical sales, account management, and program oversight to grow revenue against assigned targets within your customer portfolio. Accounts are assigned to you — this is a role focused on deepening and expanding relationships within existing customers, not on prospecting for net-new logos.

What You'll Own

Revenue & Account Growth

•        Grow annual billed revenue against assigned revenue targets within your customer portfolio

•        Expand DDM's footprint inside each account — new divisions, programs, and buyers — by proactively identifying and pursuing opportunities within accounts already assigned to you

•        Generate and convert RFQs through competitive quoting and consistent account engagement

•        Ensure consistent weekly billable revenue through quoting new work and ensuring the execution of existing backlog

•        Maintain and improve gross margin through effective pricing, scope management, and value selling

•        Build and maintain strategic account plans with quarterly business reviews

Customer Relationship Management

•        Serve as the single point of contact for all commercial and technical matters within your accounts

•        Ensure on-time delivery performance meets or exceeds customer commitments

•        Proactively communicate order status, quality issues, and delivery changes

•        Resolve customer concerns quickly, escalating to leadership when needed

•        Map customer organizations to understand purchasing structure and decision-making authority

Program & Order Execution

•        Process and validate purchase orders for accuracy of specifications, pricing, and delivery requirements

•        Set up new jobs in the MRP system

•        Coordinate shipments, including documentation and compliance with ITAR / export control requirements

•        Monitor job profitability and partner with operations to resolve issues affecting margin

•        Maintain accurate, current data in DDM's CRM and quoting systems

•        Support collections by ensuring invoice accuracy and following up on past-due accounts

What Success Looks Like

•        Annual billed revenue at or above your assigned revenue targets

•        Consistent weekly billable revenue through new quoted work and execution of existing backlog

•        Gross margin performance at or above target on managed accounts

•        Strong on-time delivery performance and customer retention

What You Bring

•        Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or a technical field (or equivalent experience)

•        2–3 years of experience in technical sales, account management, or program management in a manufacturing environment

•        Solid understanding of manufacturing processes, drawings, and specifications

•        Excellent written and verbal communication skills

•        Comfort with CRM systems, quoting software, and Microsoft Office

•        Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

•        Familiarity with quality and regulatory requirements common in precision manufacturing

•        Aptitude for serving others and finding solutions to supply chain problems

Preferred

•        Experience in precision manufacturing

•        Familiarity with ERP/MRP and quoting systems

•        A track record of growing revenue within existing manufacturing accounts

Compensation & Support

This role is structured with a base salary plus a performance incentive tied to billed revenue above an established baseline, with additional upside for margin performance. You'll be backed by a strong leadership team laser-focused on achieving the same service and revenue goals, along with our CRM and quoting systems, to help you execute at a high level.

Why DDM

This is a key role within our organization, with direct visibility to leadership and real ownership over the accounts you manage. DDM is planning aggressive expansion, and this role offers genuine opportunity for growth as we scale — you'll help shape how we grow, not just execute against someone else's plan. We offer the same robust benefits you'd expect from a larger company, with the culture and agility of a small, close-knit team, and a real chance to participate in that growth.
