Program Manager Scrum Master information

What is a program manager scrum master?

A Program Manager Scrum Master is a professional who combines the responsibilities of overseeing multiple related projects (as a Program Manager) with facilitating Agile Scrum processes (as a Scrum Master). This role ensures that teams follow Scrum practices while also aligning project goals with broader organizational objectives. They work to remove obstacles, foster team collaboration, and coordinate efforts across different teams or projects. By bridging the gap between strategic program management and day-to-day Scrum facilitation, they help deliver successful outcomes on time and within scope.

How does a program manager scrum master balance overseeing multiple Agile teams while ensuring alignment with organizational goals?

A Program Manager Scrum Master typically coordinates several Agile teams, ensuring that each team's objectives are aligned with broader organizational priorities. This involves facilitating regular cross-team communication, removing impediments, and maintaining transparency across projects. They often use tools like program increment planning and Scrum of Scrums to synchronize efforts while supporting teams in following Agile best practices. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills, proactive stakeholder management, and continuous monitoring of progress toward strategic goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager scrum master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager Scrum Master, you need a solid background in project management, Agile/Scrum methodologies, and a relevant bachelor's degree or certification such as PMP or Certified Scrum Master (CSM). Familiarity with Agile project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana is typically required. Outstanding leadership, facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills help you motivate teams and remove obstacles. These competencies ensure effective delivery of complex programs, alignment across teams, and continual process improvement.

Job description

Summary

We are looking for a Senior Scrum Master to foster Agile practices, empower self-organizing engineering teams, and drive continuous improvement across cross-functional LATAM and US-based development teams. In this leadership-focused role, you will act as a catalyst for team success, working closely with Delivery Managers, Tech Leads, and Product Managers to remove impediments, facilitate Scrum ceremonies, and align execution with strategic value delivery. Operating with high autonomy, you will mentor other facilitators, address organizational impediments, and conduct Agile maturity assessments to scale high-performing teams.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Professional Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a Scrum Master, Agile Facilitator, or Agile Coach leading software development teams across LATAM and US environments
  • Proven track record in guiding cross-functional teams through Scrum, Kanban, and hybrid Agile frameworks from team formation to high performance
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating directly with Delivery Managers, Product Managers, and Tech Leads to align product roadmaps with sprint execution commitments
  • Hands-on experience conducting Agile maturity assessments, facilitating root-cause analysis, and driving data-driven continuous improvement using Agile metrics
  • Strong experience working in remote, distributed, and multicultural software engineering ecosystems

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate core Agile ceremonies (Sprint Planning, Daily Stand-ups, Backlog Refinement, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives), ensuring events are productive and time-boxed
  • Coach and mentor engineering teams, Product Owners, and stakeholders on Agile principles, self-organization, and value-driven delivery
  • Identify, track, and proactively resolve technical and operational impediments to safeguard team delivery commitments
  • Foster psychological safety, open communication, active listening, and constructive feedback loops within development teams
  • Define, monitor, and analyze team Agile metrics (e.g., velocity, throughput, cycle time) to support data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement
  • Assess team Agile maturity, design tailored workshops, and act as an internal Agile consultant and mentor for emerging facilitators
  • Partner with Product leadership to maintain backlog transparency, artifact documentation, and clear acceptance criteria

Required Technical Skills

Strong experience in several of the following areas:

  • Agile Frameworks & Coaching: Mastery of Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, or Lean methodologies, team coaching, and Agile transformation practices
  • Agile Tooling & Management: Deep proficiency with Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, Miro, or Mural for backlog management, tracking, and remote facilitation
  • Metrics & Analytics: Expertise in tracking and interpreting Agile delivery metrics (Velocity, Burndown charts, Cumulative Flow Diagrams, Lead/Cycle Time)
  • Facilitation & Problem Solving: Advanced facilitation techniques, creative retrospective formats, and root-cause analysis frameworks (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams)

Nice to Have

  • Official Agile certifications (e.g., Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM), PSM II, SAFe Agilist, or ICP-ACC)
  • Experience working in nearshore IT consulting, software services, or fast-paced product development environments for US clients
  • Familiarity with software engineering workflows, modern tech stacks, and CI/CD concepts to effectively collaborate with engineering leads
