Job description

Purpose:
The Data Analyst Senior II, Data Analytics & Fraud Forensics reports to the Manager, Data Analytics & Fraud Forensics. The Senior II's primary responsibility is to execute high quality data analytics projects in support of Internal Audit, Compliance, and Fraud Team engagements, in a timely manner and in accordance with professional standards and occasionally overseeing more junior staff. Accountable for departmental data analytics and fraud investigation tools, the Data Analytics & Fraud Forensics team is responsible for leveraging organizational data for analysis, monitoring, investigation, and planning activities. The Senior II is accountable for producing workpapers and deliverables (such as reports and data visualizations) that are professionally written for an executive audience and that reflect an understanding of company objectives and capabilities, control requirements, and industry best practices. The position is responsible for maintaining connections to, and proficiency in, established organizational data repositories to facilitate data analytics work. The Senior II is also responsible for leading various computer forensic and investigative activities in support of Fraud Team investigations and coordination with technical resources in the Information Security and Information Services departments. The Senior II is also responsible for assisting the manager with training the staff in data analytics tools and techniques. Senior II is able to evidence leadership capabilities to facilitate change in a constructive and collaborative manner. This position will be expected to lead complete projects including meetings with departmental and external management.

The position is located in Pittsburgh PA and is a flexible hybrid role with some in-person presence required.
Responsibilities:

  • Department Goals: Successfully manages many competing demands and is able to monitor that individual work is delivered on time and within budgeted hours. Enhance the culture through the execution of analytics. Meets departmental goals for productivity.
  • Leadership: Participates in departmental and organizational special projects. Possesses basic public speaking / presentation skills and is comfortable leading opening and closing meetings, including explaining issues to clients. Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with peers outside of the department who are central to furthering Data Analytics initiatives (i.e. data warehouse teams, information security, etc.). Proactively fosters an understanding of, and monitors changes in, the Data Analytics and Healthcare industries.
  • Monitors project work for timeliness and adherence to departmental quality standards and validates evidence is organized to fully support conclusions and findings. Identifies root cause of issues and proposes valuable and effective solutions, with knowledge of the UPMC organization. Reviews all workpapers as appropriate and prepares deliverable drafts for review by Discipline or Department Management, ensuring professional writing and value-added industry perspective.
  • Risks & Industry: Identifies and contributes analytic approaches to improve risk assessment and perform targeted monitoring. Able to conduct a walk-through to understand key business processes and their risks, the data generated from the business process, and how the appropriate use of that data within analytics. Demonstrates a fundamental understanding of business processes and is able to create or supervise a preliminary process flow to review with the client. Contributes to ongoing departmental goal of entity-wide risk identification.
  • Technology: Possesses fundamental knowledge of analytical techniques, computer and mobile forensics, data querying and manipulation technologies, business intelligence and data visualization tools. Works with the Manager to distribute technical and procedural knowledge across the team and identify relevant training where needed. Able to research and analyze new and complex business, regulatory, clinical, IT, and operational processes to identify key data analysis opportunities and risks and explain them to non-technical personnel. Stays current with new and emerging technologies in data analysis and changes in the Organization's IT systems. Identifies opportunities for conventional data analytics, focused monitoring, and/or data visualization. Assists with developing data extractions which allow for a *one pull multiple use* model so as to limit the impact to backend systems. Possesses fundamental knowledge of internal and external control expectations, frameworks, and regulations. Possesses fundamental analysis and software skills with, data mining, and data visualization, and work paper technology. Is developing subject matter expertise in the daily execution of data analytics and fraud technologies and techniques.
  • Workpapers & Reports: Utilizes the Data Analytics templates and guidance documents. Also assists with communication/training of these standards throughout the department, under the direction of the Manager. Validate source data integrity and evaluate results and variances from expectations. Follows good coding practices when scripting analytics with ACL (or other tools) to allow for repeatability, QA testing, and peer reviews. Script analytics in accordance with departmental standards. Participates in departmental initiatives to improve the use of data visualization. Capable of developing strong testing steps for routine statistical analytics opportunities.

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Technology, Computer Science, Math, Engineering, or other statistical science.
  • Minimum of five years of related work experience (or three years and preferred certification or Master's degree) required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in data/ business analytics, data warehousing, business intelligence, information technology/information security/ IT auditing required.
  • Professional certification and/or Master's degree preferred.
  • Degree Preferences: Data Science, Business Analytics, Health Information Technology, Information Technology/Systems, Information Security, Computer Forensics, Computer Science. Experience Preferences: Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, IT Auditing, Information Security, Computer Forensics, Information Technology, Health Care, Database Management.
  • Certification Preferences: CISA, CISSP, CFE, CIA, CPA, CHC, CCEP, Six Sigma, ACDA.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
