What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need expertise in project planning, resource allocation, risk management, and a solid understanding of program life cycles, often supported by a bachelor's degree and experience in project or program management. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Project, Jira, and certifications such as PMP or PgMP is typically required. Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help in coordinating cross-functional teams and managing stakeholder expectations. These skills ensure that complex programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What is program management?

Program management is the coordinated oversight and management of multiple related projects that align with an organization's strategic objectives. Program managers ensure that projects within a program are executed efficiently, risks are managed, and benefits are realized. They focus on aligning project outcomes with business goals, optimizing resources, and communicating progress to stakeholders. Unlike project managers, who handle individual projects, program managers oversee a collection of projects to deliver greater value.

How does a program manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals?

Program Managers work closely with cross-functional teams such as engineering, marketing, finance, and operations to align project objectives with organizational strategy. They facilitate communication, coordinate resources, and manage dependencies across teams to ensure milestones are met on schedule. Regular meetings, status updates, and transparent documentation are key practices, helping to address challenges proactively and keep everyone on track. This collaborative approach not only drives program success but also builds strong professional relationships across the organization.

How to get a job in program management?

Program managers typically have previous experience as a project manager or in a similar role. Most program managers have a bachelor’s degree in business or related field. The exact requirements for a program management job may vary from position to position, but you should be familiar with the organization’s mission and products as well as the specific needs listed in the job description. If a company is looking for a program manager for a specific department, experience working in that area is an obvious boon.

What is the difference between Program Management vs Project Management?

AspectProgram ManagementProject Management

Is program management a good career path?

Program management is a viable career that involves coordinating multiple projects to achieve strategic objectives, often requiring skills in leadership, communication, and risk management. It offers opportunities across various industries and typically requires certifications like PMP or PgMP, along with experience in project management tools. The role can lead to senior leadership positions and offers competitive salaries.

What are program management jobs?

Program management jobs involve overseeing multiple related projects to ensure they align with organizational goals and deliver value. Program managers coordinate teams, manage budgets, and use tools like project management software to track progress and mitigate risks. These roles typically require strong leadership, communication skills, and often certification such as PMP or PgMP.

What are the top 3 skills of a program management?

Program management requires strong leadership, excellent communication, and advanced organizational skills to coordinate multiple projects and teams effectively. Job description

Job Summary

Technical Program Management Office (TPMO) in Cloud Storage & Services Business unit is responsible for leading programs for cloud integrated, fully managed, high-performance scalable Cloud storage solution across Azure, Google Cloud and AWS. If you love finding creative solutions to challenging problems, innovate and want to be part of a growing team building the true Cloud concepts for the biggest tech giants then we have this opportunity for you where you can make an impact and help your career advance together with NetApp Cloud Storage.

This Technical Program Manager will own and manage the end-to-end program management of NetApp's key growth initiatives in the Cloud BU identified by the CEO and executive leadership team.  This position will report directly to the Director, TPMO, Cloud Storage & Services.  Key responsibilities include working cross-functional with all stakeholders to identify and gain alignment around a set of deliverables and program milestones that lead to strategic solutions for Software as a Service in the Cloud Storage & Services BU and NetApp as a company. Stakeholders could be internal to NetApp or external customers, vendors, and partners.

The incumbent will lead the cross-functional team from concept, design, implementation to launch the product/service in the market while working within the guidelines and cadence defined by the program team. The TPM will serve as the technical delivery owner driving cross-program dependencies to resolution, executive communication, risk management and end-to-end delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end program management and delivery - milestones, critical path, dependency maps, and release integration across engineering and product teams in multiple geographies.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment across roles, functions, and geos; navigate ambiguity and keep teams focused on shared goals and measurable outcomes.
  • Understand and communicate program resource needs - current and future - and facilitate prioritization and decision forums with Engineering, release management, and product leadership.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior business and shared services partners; challenge assumptions, read stakeholder dynamics, and influence decision-making with a credible point of view.
  • Partner with senior engineers to decompose initiatives into milestones with clear acceptance criteria, dependency linkages, and release-readiness gates.
  • Identify risks and blocking issues early; recommend options, facilitate team decisions, and escalate with cost-of-delay analysis and recommended paths forward.
  • Deliver concise, decision-oriented executive briefings on deployment progress, results, and program health to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Represent the program in CSS portfolio reviews, semester planning, and leadership forums.
  • Improve program traceability and automate recurring TPM workflows in alignment with CSS TPMO standards.
Job Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience of successful releases for multiple products or services in technology focused programs.
  • Demonstrated delivery of complex, multi-team platform or infrastructure programs in cloud, storage, distributed systems, or SaaS environments.
  • Strong understanding of project and resource interdependencies within a program or portfolio, including shared capacity and prioritization tradeoffs.
  • Ability to read and constructively challenge architecture documents, design specifications, release plans, and dependency graphs.
  • Strong command of Agile-at-scale and release train mechanics: milestone planning, GA readiness gates, change control, and critical path management.
  • Proven ability to influence senior engineering and product leaders without direct authority in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Results-oriented self-starter with strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills; proactively mitigates risk, resolves issues, and escalates when appropriate.
  • Proficiency with Jira, Confluence, and Microsoft Office.
  • Storage industry experience, PMP certification, and Agile experience preferred.
Education
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering.

Compensation:
The target salary range for this position is 170,000 - 253,000 USD. The salary offered will be determined by the candidate's location, qualifications, experience, and education and may be outside of this range. Final compensation packages are competitive and in line with industry standards, reflecting a variety of factors, and include a comprehensive benefits package. This may cover Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Retirement or Pension Plans, Paid Time Off, various Leave options, Performance-Based Incentives, employee stock purchase plan, and/or restricted stocks (RSU's), with all offerings subject to regional variations and governed by local laws, regulations, and company policies.
