Job description
MISSION STATEMENT: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. FUNCTION OF POSITION: The Divisional Director of Development provides strategic leadership and oversight for all fundraising efforts across the State of Alaska. This role is responsible for coordinating and guiding development staff, ensuring effective support and consultation is provided to all Corps within the Division.
Key areas of responsibility include public relations, annual giving, major gifts, grant writing, volunteer engagement, assisting THQ with planned giving, and both digital and direct marketing initiatives. As a supervisory position, the Divisional Director leads the Community Relations Department, fostering collaboration, alignment, and a unified approach to advancing the organization’s mission.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum B.S. degree in the areas of business, management, or related subjects with minimum of five years of experience in business administration, fundraising, or related fields
- Knowledge of CRM databases. Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge a plus.
- Requires understanding, respect, and acceptance of the philosophy of The Salvation Army
- Must have demonstrated supervisory ability and fundraising experience
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manages staff fulfilling the following roles: communications; direct marketing, digital fundraising, major and corporate gifts; private foundation grants; and donor care
- Must maintain a valid Alaska Driver’s License
- Must successfully complete Decision Driving Safety Test before driving for The Salvation Army and annually recertify as required
- Must meet certification by and participation in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program (Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that an employee may not obtain more than two [2] moving violations or accidents within any 12 month-period; see The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy)
ADVISORY ORGANIZATIONS:
- The Director of Development is responsible for working with Corps Officers to see that Corps Advisory Boards are active and organized.
- Assist with the Anchorage Metro Advisory Board as requested by the Metro Area Coordinator.
- Provide THQ with annual advisory board statistics and evaluation.
PLANNING AND EVALUATION: The Director of Development will regularly update the Divisional Finance Council through the preparation, presentation, and interpretation of monthly reports and year-to-year comparisons.
MAIL APPEAL: The Director of Development will work with the direct mail vendor to oversee all appeal approvals, donor relations, and database oversight. The Director will be responsible for overseeing the Development Coordinator to ensure that all donations are deposited, acknowledged and maintained in the donor database.
DONOR RECOGNITION: The Director of Development will plan, propose and, upon approval, implement a plan of donor recognition, including donor recognition activities.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH FOUNDATIONS: The Director of Development will develop and maintain a relationship with large foundations and will support the Divisional Grant Writer, Corps Officers and Divisional Leadership in determining budget relieving grant opportunities.
PUBLICITY: The Director of Development will understand and be able to execute various publicity types such as radio, television, newspaper, and social media and will supervise and monitor the Director of Marketing & Communications in preparation of publicity releases, newsletters, online ads, Impact Reports, and other printed materials for the division.
PLANNED GIVING The Director of Development will assist the Territorial Planned Giving Department with in state support such as visiting donors in person and helping to facilitate gifts as requested..
FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT: The Director of Development will supervise a fundraising effort targeted towards individuals, corporations and foundations who have the capacity to give major gifts throughout the division. The Director of Development will personally maintain a caseload of approximately 50 major donors, which include individuals, corporations and foundations.
CONFERENCES AND NEW ORGANIZATIONS: The Director of Development will meet with influential people in the community to represent the Army. The Divisional Director may be called upon to represent The Salvation Army at Territorial and National development conferences, which have been approved by the Divisional Commander.
PERSONNEL: The Director of Development will supervise activities of assigned personnel; ensure adequate communication with all staff relating to adherence to Army policy and their particular job descriptions; work closely with the director of human resources to prepare annual salary/performance reviews and
BUDGET CONTROL: The Director of Development will be responsible for budget preparation, submission and, upon approval, budget controls. This will include approval of all department vouchers and invoices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting program demands
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
- Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Ability to work with persons of varied socio-economic backgrounds
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and ability to delegate
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and computer literacy
