THE PROGRAM
The Health Care and Public Health Program (HCPH), within the Center for Health, People, and Places, examines the delivery of preventive, primary, and specialty health care across the life course, focusing on issues such as patient safety, workforce development, and health care financing. Our work also examines public health systems, including surveillance, and promotes population health improvement.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Research Associate develops pertinent background research and drafts background papers. Performs research and analysis and prepares preliminary outlines of projects. Prepares data for use in summaries, fact sheets, and reports. Edits report material developed by committee members, senior staff, and consultants. Responds to inquiries about study activities and increases public awareness of studies. Manages related databases, including reference databases. May assist with administrative duties related to programs/projects.

Responsibilities

Research & Analysis

  • Develops information sources; reads, analyzes, and evaluates data and literature.

  • Prepares preliminary outlines of projects to determine appropriate methodology.

  • Performs research and analysis, including organizing technical data and reports and compiling summaries of information.

  • May perform basic statistical research and analysis.

  • Analyzes data and prepares written interpretations; synthesizes data for reports and other outputs.


Technical Writing & Knowledge Products

  • Writes technical papers or summaries; drafts, summarizes, and edits findings.

  • Abstracts information from scientific studies to create tables and supporting materials.

  • Prepares reports for review and assists with review response; ensures edits are incorporated.

  • Creates bibliographies, graphics, and tables for reports.


Data & Information Management

  • Manages and maintains bibliographic and analytical databases.

  • Tracks references and documents statistical analyses, including methodology and data sources.

  • Prepares and formats survey instruments and databases to collect specified information.


Committee & Meeting Support

  • Participates in selecting literature for committee members and stakeholders.

  • Attends meetings to present information, receive feedback, and prepare summaries.

  • May assist with administrative tasks related to committee activities, including correspondence and meeting planning.

  • May assist senior staff in identifying potential speakers and committee or forum members.


Compliance, Outreach & Stakeholder Engagement

  • May ensure compliance with Federal Advisory Committee Act and NRC Governing Board Project Approval Committee requirements.

  • Ensures projects are maintained in required systems and documents are properly archived.

  • Responds to inquiries from sponsors, public sector stakeholders, and external experts.

  • Supports efforts to increase awareness of studies and engages with professional and advocacy groups.


Staff Support & Development

  • Serves as a mentor or resource to staff and may assist in training junior employees.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to solve intellectual problems of appreciable variety and complexity using originality and ingenuity. Ability to exercise appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication. Excellent written and verbal skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees. 

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge.

Preferred Education: Master's in public health (MPH) or a related field.

Minimum Experience: Two years of related professional experience.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to travel.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Hybrid office/telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 60%, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.

Compensation & Benefits: An estimated compensation range for this position is $56,410 - $70,510. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters.
