Job description

Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Program Aide to support programming within our community centers: West Side Community Center and Geoffrey Canada Community Center.

The Program Aide will bring a strong passion for Harlem Children’s Zone’s mission: to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty through comprehensive, community-based programming that expands opportunities for families, and local residents to thrive in school, work, and life.

The Program Aide will play a key role in supporting vibrant, engaging programming that serves children, youth, and community members beyond traditional after-school hours. This individual will work closely with Activity Specialists and Coordinators to assist in facilitating activities, preparing materials, and ensuring programs run smoothly. In addition, the Program Aide will help support special events, workshops, and community engagements that foster connection and participation across the center.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable team player who brings energy, creativity, and a strong commitment to community. The ideal candidate enjoys working with diverse groups of children, families, and residents and is eager to contribute to a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment. Previous experience supporting youth programs, community-based activities, or group facilitation is preferred.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED

Who You Are

  • A commitment to HCZ's mission and the communities we serve
  • Some experience working with students, families, and/or community members
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Familiar with issues prevalent in underserved communities
  • Must be able to engage and motivate participants

What You’ll Do

  • Work directly with participants in all of their activities (i.e. arts, dance, sports, etc.)
  • Assist activity specialists with participants' physical, emotional, social, moral and intellectual development
  • Create and implement activities, workshops and events for youth and families based on their interests and with their involvement
  • Model positive behavior
  • Engage participants in dialogue (one-to-one and group discussions) around topics of concern for their age group
  • Maintain the upkeep of supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Schedule

  • On-Site (Monday-Thursday) 5PM – 9PM and Saturdays from 10AM – 3PM
  • During our Summer Camp Program, the Program Aide’s schedule will shift to Monday-Thursday from 1PM – 6PM.
