Job description

Position Summary

The Salvation Army Northern Division Saint Paul Eastside Corps is committed to "Doing the Most Good" by providing holistic, person-centered services to individuals and families. In addition to worship services and pastoral care, services include support with food, clothing, utilities, rent, securing housing, and both short- and long-term case management, as well as connections to community partners.

The Program Aide supports the daily operations of the community center. This position provides direct assistance during recreational, educational, and outreach activities by welcoming participants, preparing program spaces, monitoring safety, and helping facilitate a positive and inclusive environment. The Aide also helps with equipment upkeep, building access, and event logistics, ensuring the community center remains a safe, engaging, and well-maintained space for individuals and families of all ages.

Wage:$17.23 - $18.00 per hour, 25 hours per week

Essential Functions (Approximate time spent)

  • Program Coverage & Check-In (25%): Provide a welcoming presence during program hours by overseeing participant check-in/out, maintaining accurate records, and assisting visitors.
  • Facility Access & Rental Support (25%): Open and close the building for scheduled programs and rentals. Remain on-site during rentals to monitor appropriate use and assist as needed.
  • Program Setup & Space Reset (15%): Prepare spaces prior to programming, including arranging equipment as needed. Reset spaces at the conclusion of programming to maintain a clean and orderly environment for future use.
  • Participant Safety (10%): Monitor spaces to ensure compliance with safety protocols, promote respectful behavior, maintain appropriate staffing levels, and de-escalate minor issues as needed.
  • Equipment Maintenance (10%): Care for recreational and program equipment. Track inventory and report repair or replacement needs to the supervisor.
  • Community & Special Event Support (10%): Assist with setup, logistics, and on-site support for events such as National Night Out, backpack distribution, and seasonal events.
  • Activity Support (5%): Help lead age-appropriate games, crafts, and other activities, engaging participants in inclusive and mission-aligned experiences.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Previous experience in a community center, school, church, or recreational setting preferred.
  • Must successfully pass all background checks.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and acceptable MVR preferred.

Competencies

  • Clear and respectful verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in routine or sensitive situations.
  • Dependable and organized, with basic recordkeeping and scheduling skills.
  • Works well as part of a team and supports a positive environment.
  • Flexible and willing to adapt to changing program needs.
  • Comfortable using basic computer tools (email, Word, Excel, etc.).

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a combination of indoor (e.g., gymnasium, classrooms, office spaces) and outdoor settings.
  • Must be able to move throughout the building, lift and carry equipment (up to 30 lbs), and set up program areas as needed.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and occasional physical activity related to recreation programs.
  • Regular schedule includes evening and weekend hours to support programming and events.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Driving/Travel Requirements

  • If MVR cleared, occasionally operate agency vehicles in support of program operations and organizational objectives.
