Job Description The Youth Program Aide (Part-Time) is responsible for providing a safe, positive, engaging, and well-supervised recreational experience for children and youth participating in City youth recreation and camp programs. This position assists with the implementation of age-appropriate recreational, educational, athletic, social, and enrichment activities designed to promote participation, teamwork, personal development, and enjoyment. The Youth Program Aide provides direct supervision of program participants and actively engages with children and campers throughout scheduled activities, field trips, games, special events, meals, transition periods, and other components of the camp program.
The position is responsible for maintaining awareness of participant locations and activities, enforcing established safety procedures and behavioral expectations, recognizing potential hazards, and promptly reporting accidents, injuries, behavioral concerns, or other incidents to appropriate supervisory personnel. The employee serves as a representative of the City and is expected to provide courteous and professional service to campers, parents and guardians, coworkers, volunteers, and members of the public. The position requires dependability, sound judgment, patience, enthusiasm, effective communication, and the ability to respond appropriately to changing circumstances in a fast-paced recreational environment.
The Youth Program Aide works collaboratively with other camp and recreation staff to prepare activity areas, maintain equipment and supplies, facilitate programs, monitor participants, maintain clean and orderly facilities, and support the overall operation of assigned recreation programs. Duties and responsibilities may be modified at any time to meet the needs of the organization. Job Functions Provides direct and continuous supervision of children and youth participating in assigned camps, recreation programs, field trips, special events, and related activities.
Leads and assists with organized games, sports, arts and crafts, educational activities, team-building exercises, indoor and outdoor recreation, and other age-appropriate programming. Actively participates in activities with campers and encourages positive participation, inclusion, cooperation, sportsmanship, and appropriate social interaction. Enforces established camp rules, City policies, safety procedures, behavioral expectations, and facility requirements in a consistent and age-appropriate manner.
Responds appropriately to minor injuries, illnesses, accidents, behavioral incidents, and other situations and immediately notifies supervisory personnel when circumstances require additional assistance. Assists with emergency procedures, including evacuations, sheltering, participant accountability, and implementation of established emergency action plans. Communicates professionally and respectfully with participants, parents and guardians, coworkers, supervisors, volunteers, and members of the public.
Reports significant behavioral issues, injuries, safety concerns, suspected policy violations, or unusual incidents to the appropriate supervisor. Assists with preparing, setting up, cleaning, and restoring rooms, fields, activity areas, equipment, and supplies before and after programs. Participates in required staff meetings, orientations, safety briefings, and training activities.
Follows applicable City policies and departmental procedures regarding participant safety, confidentiality, incident reporting, and customer service. Assists with maintaining attendance information, participant counts, incident documentation, equipment records, or other routine program documentation as assigned. Accompanies and supervises participants during authorized field trips, transportation activities, special events, and off-site programs when assigned.
Demonstrates dependable attendance and punctuality and remains available throughout assigned shifts to maintain required program supervision. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred; an equivalent combination of education, training, volunteer service, or relevant experience working with children or youth may be considered.
Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire. CPR, First Aid, AED, or other certifications may be required within a timeframe established by the department based on assignment. Preferred Qualifications Previous paid or volunteer experience working with children or youth in camps, recreation programs, schools, childcare programs, athletics, after-school programs, or similar settings.
Experience leading recreational games, sports, arts and crafts, educational activities, or youth enrichment programs. Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification. Experience providing customer service in a public-sector, recreation, education, childcare, or community-service environment.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in an active and changing environment. Supplemental Information Knowledge of basic principles and practices of youth recreation and supervision. Knowledge of age-appropriate games, recreational activities, and group activities.
Knowledge of basic safety practices applicable to recreation programs and facilities. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively with children, parents and guardians, coworkers, supervisors, and members of the public.
Ability to maintain appropriate supervision of children in active indoor and outdoor environments. Ability to exercise appropriate judgment and respond promptly to safety concerns and emergency situations. Ability to supervise multiple children and maintain awareness of participant locations and activities.
Ability to lead, explain, demonstrate, and participate in recreational activities. Ability to remain calm and follow established procedures during emergencies or stressful situations. Ability to enforce rules consistently and appropriately.
Ability to manage minor conflicts and behavioral concerns constructively. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, schedules, safety procedures, and program plans. Ability to work cooperatively with employees, volunteers, participants, and the public.
Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding participants and City information when required. Ability to work indoors and outdoors and tolerate seasonal weather conditions. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently change position while supervising active participants.
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and perform movements necessary to participate in or supervise recreational activities. Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull recreation equipment and supplies consistent with the essential duties of the position. Ability to visually and audibly monitor children, recognize potentially unsafe behavior or conditions, and communicate instructions in environments with moderate to high activity levels.
