POSITION SUMMARY: The Behavioral Health Technician is responsible for supporting the therapeutic milieu, under the direction of the Registered Nurse, by ensuring that the schedule/program is consistently delivered, patients are supervised, safety is maintained, and patients and guests are treated with respect and dignity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Responsible for observation and maintenance of safe milieu through patient checks and safety monitoring.
  • Completes close observation monitoring including 15-minute checks, line of sight, or one-on-one monitoring as ordered.
  • Monitors for contraband and reports any potential change of condition to the nurse.
  • Adheres to tasks delegated by the Registered Nurse related to the care of the patients including, but not limited to vital signs, specimen collection, documentation, group education, and patient monitoring.
  • Demonstrates effective milieu management skills, which promote positive patient experiences.
  • Accompany patients to off-unit activities (i.e., meals, outside breaks, off-unit visits, out-of-building activities and appointments).
  • Responsible for reporting all medical or psychiatric changes to the Registered Nurse.
  • Assists with the admission process to include belongings inventory, visitation to unit, vital signs, and other duties as delegated.
  • Documents property at admission, accounts for property usage during stay, and reconciles property at discharge.
  • Comply with the established policy and procedure requiring a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment.
  • Conducts unit safety checks each shift.
  • Encourages and assists patients in performing activities of daily living.
  • Facilitates or co-facilitates psychoeducational and therapeutic activity groups effectively, using established guidelines and/or prepared and approved information.
  • Employs appropriate crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as required and according to policy and procedure.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the program and policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Assists in orienting new staff members to their position.
  • Documents in the Medical Record according to established policies.
  • Provides pertinent feedback to the interdisciplinary treatment team regarding patient response to treatment interventions that assists in the development and revision of the treatment plan.
  • Complies with hospital policy, OSHA, and CDC guidelines regarding the collection of various specimens.
  • Always exhibits the company's core values of championing patient care, doing the right thing, embracing individuality, acting with kindness, and making a difference together.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • 1 year of previous experience working in a psychiatric health care facility preferred.
  • CPR certification is required within 30 days of employment and before any patient contact.
  • De-escalation certification required within 30 days of employment and before any patient contact.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Repetitive motion of upper body required for extended use of computer. Required specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
