Professor Lighting Designer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Professor Lighting Designer, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Professor Lighting Designer, you need a strong background in lighting design, theater production, and an advanced degree (often MFA or PhD) in a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard lighting control systems (such as ETC or GrandMA), design software like Vectorworks, and teaching platforms is essential. Exceptional communication, creativity, mentorship abilities, and organizational skills distinguish outstanding professionals in this role. These competencies ensure effective teaching, innovative design work, and the ability to guide and inspire students in both academic and practical environments.

What are Professor Lighting Designers?

Professor Lighting Designers are professionals who teach lighting design at the college or university level, while also often working as lighting designers for theater, film, television, or live events. They combine academic responsibilities—such as lecturing, mentoring students, and conducting research—with practical experience in designing lighting setups for productions. Their role is to educate future lighting designers by sharing industry knowledge, overseeing student projects, and sometimes managing campus productions. Additionally, they may contribute to scholarly work in the field of lighting design.

How does a Professor Lighting Designer typically collaborate with other faculty and students on theatrical productions?

A Professor Lighting Designer often works closely with directors, set designers, technical staff, and students to create cohesive lighting plans for university productions. They mentor student designers, supervise lighting crews, and lead workshops or courses on lighting techniques. Collaboration is key, as professors must balance their creative vision with educational objectives, ensuring students gain hands-on experience while meeting the artistic needs of each show. This teamwork fosters a supportive learning environment and helps prepare students for professional work in the field.

Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following:

We are seeking a hybrid Senior UX Designer to bridge the gap between user experience design and front-end engineering for our enterprise e-commerce platform. This role combines UX thinking with hands-on React development to create scalable, accessible, and high-performing digital experiences across browse, search, cart, and checkout flows used by millions of customers.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable designing intuitive customer journeys and building them in production-quality code. You will collaborate closely with product managers, UX designers, and engineering teams to deliver enterprise-ready web experiences while helping shape front-end standards and best practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop responsive, accessible, and user-friendly interfaces for enterprise digital products and e-commerce experiences.
  • Partner with UX, product, and engineering teams to transform wireframes, prototypes, and business requirements into production-ready applications.
  • Design reusable UI patterns, and modern web experiences using related technologies.
  • Maintain and evolve a reusable enterprise component library and shared design system supporting consistency and scalability across multiple engineering teams and products.
  • Optimize applications for performance, scalability, SEO, accessibility, cross-browser compatibility, and mobile responsiveness.
  • Identify opportunities to improve customer journeys, reduce friction, and enhance engagement through UX improvements, usability reviews, and experimentation.
  • Leverage modern AI-assisted development tools, including GitHub Copilot and Codex, to improve development efficiency and accelerate delivery.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in UX, accessibility, front-end architecture, and modern web technologies.

To join our band, you'll need the following experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in front-end development, UX engineering, UI engineering, or similar roles.
  • Strong proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and modern front-end development practices.
  • Experience with Tailwind CSS, and component-driven development using frameworks such as shadcn/ui, Radix UI, Ant Design, or similar libraries.
  • Strong understanding of UX principles, interaction design, accessibility standards (WCAG), and responsive design best practices.
  • Experience building scalable, responsive, and accessible enterprise or e-commerce web applications.
  • Experience building reusable component libraries, scalable design systems.
  • Strong proficiency with Figma and experience leveraging usability testing, customer research, and behavioral analysis tools such as UserTesting.com to validate and improve digital experiences.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Codex, or similar technologies.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in enterprise retail, e-commerce, or other high-traffic digital environments
  • Familiarity with analytics and optimization tools such as Quantum Metric, Google Analytics, Optimizely, or A/B testing platforms.
  • Experience with CMS and personalization platforms such as Salesforce, Strapi, Monetate, or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with SSR, SSG, and modern React application architecture patterns.
  • Understanding of Agile, Scrum, CI/CD, and headless commerce architectures.
  • Experience mentoring developers or leading front-end UX initiatives.
