Job description

The American Studies Program at Yale University is looking to hire a full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty member available at all ranks, including Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels, in U.S. Cultural History and Cultural Studies with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. We seek to hire a colleague whose scholarship examines the nineteenth- and/or twentieth-century cultural history of the United States, nationally and transnationally. While we will consider applications from any subfield, we are especially interested in applicants whose work focuses on: labor histories; disability history and disability studies; environmental studies and environmental history; or the historical study of colonialisms and empires. We are especially interested in applications from colleagues with a Ph.D. in American Studies or another appropriate interdisciplinary field who has an active record of undergraduate and graduate teaching, advising, and program-building in an American Studies department, as well as demonstrated experience in and commitment to the public humanities.

The teaching expectation is normally four courses per academic year, plus service to the program, including teaching in an undergraduate core course and advising graduate students.

The appointee must hold a PhD or equivalent degree or have completed all requirements for the PhD in American Studies or another appropriate interdisciplinary field by June 2027.
