The Role

Weโ€™re looking for a mid-level software engineer to develop and maintain Automatix, our internal platform that manages the full lifecycle of healthcare data โ€” from file receipt and validation through batch processing and transmission. Youโ€™ll build features, improve workflows, and support the analysts and operations staff who rely on the system daily.

This is a handsโ€‘on role in a small team where your work has immediate, visible impact. Youโ€™ll own features endโ€‘toโ€‘end: database schema, backend logic, UI, and deployment.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Build new features and enhance existing functionality across a mature Rails application (models, controllers, views, background jobs)
  • Design and modify database schemas (MySQL) to support evolving business requirements
  • Create and maintain reporting dashboards, data validation workflows, and batch processing tools
  • Write server-rendered UI with ERB templates, jQuery, and AJAX
  • Collaborate directly with analysts, operations staff, and management to translate business needs into working software
  • Troubleshoot production issues related to data processing, file transfers, and system integrations
  • Maintain and extend background job processing for automated data pipelines
  • Support management requests for ad hoc custom reports
What Weโ€™re Looking For

Required:

  • 3โ€“5 years of professional software development experience
  • Proficiency in Ruby on Rails or similar โ€” comfortable working in a large, established codebase
  • Solid working knowledge of SQL and relational databases (MySQL preferred)
  • Experience with server-rendered web applications (ERB/HTML/CSS/JavaScript)
  • Familiarity with jQuery and traditional DOMโ€‘based frontend development
  • Understanding of authentication/authorization patterns (LDAP/Active Directory, roleโ€‘based access control)
  • Comfort reading and modifying code you didnโ€™t write โ€” this role is primarily enhancement and extension, not greenfield
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own priorities in a smallโ€‘team environment

Preferred:

  • Experience with legacy Rails applications (Rails 4.x / Rails 5.x)
  • Background in healthcare data, EDI, or data pipeline/ETL systems
  • Familiarity with background job frameworks (Delayed Job, Sidekiq, or similar)
  • Experience with fileโ€‘based integrations (FTP/SFTP, CSV/fixedโ€‘width parsing)
  • Exposure to SAS or other data processing tools
  • Knowledge of gems like CanCanCan, CarrierWave, will_paginate, or Devise/Adauth
  • Experience working with Claude Code extension in VS Code
  • Knowledge of AWS cloud services and cloudโ€‘based application architectures preferred
  • Experience with modern development and DevOps tools and practices, including CI/CD pipelines, source control, automation, containerization, and infrastructure management preferred

In-Office Expectations: While this is a hybrid role, periodic inโ€‘office presence in Cleveland is required. This includes attendance at team meetings and onboarding/training sessions, as well as scheduled visits to collaborate with project management and user interface stakeholders during requirements gathering phases.
