How much do professional poker jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for professional poker in the United States is $13.44, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $15.14 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Professional Poker Player, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Poker Player, you need a deep understanding of game theory, probability, and strategic decision-making, typically honed through extensive practice and study. Proficiency with online poker platforms, tracking software like PokerTracker or Hold'em Manager, and knowledge of current tournament structures is essential. Exceptional emotional control, discipline, and psychological insight set standout players apart in high-pressure environments. These skills are crucial for consistently making profitable decisions, adapting to opponents, and maintaining long-term success in a competitive and unpredictable field.

How much do poker professionals make?

Poker professionals' earnings vary widely based on skill, experience, and the level of play, with top players often earning hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars annually through tournament winnings and cash games. Many rely on a combination of tournament prizes, online play, sponsorships, and coaching, but income can be inconsistent and depends heavily on performance and bankroll management.

What is the difference between Professional Poker vs Casino Dealer?

AspectProfessional PokerCasino Dealer
Required CredentialsNo formal certification required, but strategic and mathematical skills are essentialTypically requires a dealer license or certification specific to the casino
Work EnvironmentPrivate or tournament settings, often flexible hoursCasino floors, fixed shifts, structured environment
Industry UsageGambling, entertainment, competitive gamingCasino operations, hospitality industry
Job FocusPlaying strategically to win money, managing bankrollsDealing cards, ensuring game integrity, customer service

While both roles are involved in gambling environments, Professional Poker focuses on playing and winning through skill and strategy, whereas a Casino Dealer primarily manages the game and ensures smooth operations. Both require knowledge of gambling rules, but their responsibilities and work settings differ significantly.

What jobs pay $400 an hour?

In the context of professional poker, top players can earn $400 or more per hour through high-stakes tournaments and cash games, especially with significant experience and skill. Such earnings depend on the player's reputation, skill level, and the stakes of the games they participate in. Other jobs that can pay $400 an hour include specialized consulting, certain medical specialists, and high-level legal or financial advisors, but these are less common in comparison to professional poker earnings at the top levels.

What are some common challenges professional poker players face in maintaining consistent performance?

Professional poker players often encounter challenges such as managing emotional swings (tilt), staying disciplined with bankroll management, and adapting to different playing styles at various tables. The pressure of fluctuating income and long hours, sometimes spent traveling or competing online, can also impact focus and mental well-being. Successful pros develop strong routines, regularly study game theory, and maintain healthy work-life balance to ensure long-term consistency in their results.

What is a professional poker player?

A professional poker player is someone who earns their primary income from playing poker, either in live tournaments, cash games, or online platforms. They use a combination of skill, strategy, mathematics, and psychology to consistently win money over time. Professional poker players often study the game intensively, manage their bankroll carefully, and continually adapt to different playing environments and opponents. Unlike casual players, professionals approach poker as a business and dedicate significant time to improving their game.

Is professional poker a good career?

Professional poker is a career that involves playing poker for income, often requiring strong skills in strategy, mathematics, and psychology. Success depends on consistent performance, bankroll management, and the ability to handle variable income and high-pressure situations.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

Professional poker players can earn $10,000 or more per month through skillful gameplay and strategic decision-making. Success depends on experience, discipline, and understanding of game theory, with many players managing their own schedules and bankrolls without formal degrees.
