Professional Organizing information

What does a professional organizer do?

Professional organizers help individuals and businesses declutter, arrange, and optimize spaces to improve efficiency and reduce stress. They assess clients' needs, develop customized organizing systems, and often provide hands-on assistance in sorting and categorizing items. Their work can include organizing homes, offices, digital files, and even time management systems. Professional organizers also offer guidance on maintaining organization and may recommend tools or products to support ongoing order.

What are some common challenges professional organizers face when working with clients, and how can these be addressed?

Professional organizers often encounter clients who feel overwhelmed by clutter or are emotionally attached to their belongings. Building trust and demonstrating empathy are essential in these situations. Organizers should use clear communication and step-by-step plans to guide clients through the decluttering process, helping them make decisions at their own pace. Flexibility and patience are key, as each client’s needs and pace will vary. Collaborating closely ensures clients feel supported and helps achieve lasting organizational results.

How much money can you make as a professional organizer?

Professional organizers typically earn between $25,000 and $75,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and client base. Many work independently, setting their own rates, which can range from $50 to $150 per hour, and income can increase with specialization and reputation.

What is the difference between Professional Organizing vs Professional Decluttering Specialist?

AspectProfessional OrganizingProfessional Decluttering Specialist
CertificationsOften holds certifications like NAPO or ICDMay have similar certifications but focuses more on decluttering techniques
Work EnvironmentWorks in homes, offices, storage spacesPrimarily in residential settings, focusing on decluttering
Job FocusOrganizing entire spaces, systems, and workflowsRemoving unnecessary items to reduce clutter
Industry UsageCommonly used in home and office organizationOften used interchangeably but emphasizes decluttering

While both roles aim to improve space efficiency, Professional Organizing involves creating organized systems and workflows, whereas a Professional Decluttering Specialist primarily focuses on removing excess items to reduce clutter. The two often overlap but differ in scope and approach.

What jobs can I do if I like professional organizing?

If you enjoy professional organizing, you can pursue careers such as organizing consultant, home organizer, office organizer, or organizer for moving companies. These roles often require strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and sometimes certification or training in organizing methods. Opportunities exist in residential, commercial, and specialty organizing environments.

Is being a professional organizer worth it?

Being a professional organizer can be a rewarding career for those who enjoy helping clients improve their space and productivity. It often requires strong organizational skills, certification, and the ability to work independently or with clients in various environments. Income potential varies based on experience, location, and client base.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional organizer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Professional Organizer, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of space optimization principles, often supported by relevant training or certification such as CPO (Certified Professional Organizer). Familiarity with project management tools, inventory systems, and digital organization platforms is commonly required. Excellent communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities help build trust with clients and adapt solutions to their unique needs. These skills enable organizers to deliver customized, efficient results that improve clients’ productivity and well-being.

Interviews will be conducted in mid April 2026 for a 27-week term beginning May 18 and ending November 22. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis with priority given to candidates who apply by April 3, 2026.

This is an in-person role based in Denver with work taking place across the city and nearby communities within approximately a one-hour radius.

General Summary

This is a 27 week training internship/fellowship. At 15 hours per week over 27 weeks, Field Organizing Fellows will serve as the on-the-ground catalyst for building new States Win chapters. The ideal candidate combines professionalism with warmth, communicates with confidence and thrives in a fast-paced, goal-driven environment. Fellows will learn and hone vital organizing skills with the support of seasoned campaign operatives experienced in electoral organizing. All work is performed in-person in Denver and the surrounding areas within an hour drive. Must have general availability across weekday and weekend mornings, afternoons and evenings. The specific schedule will vary based on operational needs and will include a combination of both set hours and limited flexibility. Attendance at scheduled meetings is required.

This fellowship is unpaid and provides a cost of living stipend in the amount of $8,100.

  • Learn to and then practice developing organizing strategy, goals, and tactics with a focus on creativity and continuous improvement to meet States Win's goals
  • Learn to and then practice drafting and editing effective recruitment scripts for phone, text, and email
  • Learn best practices for phonebanking and practice those new skills by supporting national phonebanking efforts to maximize effective direct voter contact in critical state legislative districts
Program Structure

All cohort calls will be scheduled with attention to fellow availability:

  • First two weeks/onboarding: Group training and orientation sessions led by Organizing Department staff. Goals: learn and practice essential organizing and phonebanking skills; understand States Win's systems and structures.
  • Organizing weeks: 4 hours a week drafting/editing/executing plans with a heavy focus on volunteer recruitment; 2 hours a week of hosting and supporting States Win phonebanks, 2 hours of cohort meetings, to include a weekly hour-long group strategy/update call and a weekly 30-minute training workshop; weekly 30-minute 1:1 call with staff cohort leader; 2 hours of drafting, editing and sending emails to mailing lists; 5 hours of recruiting and attending meetings with volunteer leads and hosting engagement events.
  • Total: 15 hours a week.
  • Final week: post election debriefs with team, wrap-up and handoff, progress-to-goal review, program evaluations and exit interviews.

This fellowship is designed to train aspiring organizers in voter contact and volunteer capacity-building through personal connection and conversation. Prior campaign experience is not required. We welcome applicants who enjoy meeting new people, building relationships in the community, working as part of a team, are strong writers, good listeners and do well speaking on the phone and at in person events.
