What is a professional engineer?

Professional Engineers (PEs) are licensed engineers who have met the education, experience, and exam requirements established by their state or country. They are legally authorized to sign off on engineering projects, offer their services to the public, and take responsibility for the safety and integrity of engineering work. Becoming a PE typically involves earning an accredited engineering degree, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, gaining relevant work experience, and passing the Professional Engineering (PE) exam. The PE license signifies a high standard of competence and ethics in the engineering profession.

What does a professional engineer do?

A professional engineer uses mathematics and science to create safe and efficient buildings, machines, and applications. Engineers typically specialize in a particular field, such as aerospace, mechanical, or structural engineering. Your job duties vary depending on your area of expertise and employer but may include creating plans, designing machinery, or building skyscrapers. This career often involves a combination of office and field work. Frequent travel is an additional job requirement for many professional engineering jobs. Long hours and overtime work are also expected to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a degree in engineering, typically complemented by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or project management tools, along with ongoing continuing education, is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management abilities help engineers deliver effective solutions and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure engineers can design safe, efficient systems and maintain high professional standards in complex technical environments.

What are some common challenges professional engineers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Professional Engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges in prioritizing tasks, coordinating with diverse teams, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to handle shifting deadlines and resource allocation. Collaborating closely with project managers, clients, and other engineers helps maintain project momentum and quality, while regular progress reviews ensure that no critical detail is overlooked.

San Diego, California, United States Software and Services

Join Claris, an Apple company, as a Professional Services Engineer. Claris empowers people and organizations to solve complex business problems through powerful, flexible technology. We are seeking an experienced FileMaker developer who is equally comfortable building solutions, advising customers, collaborating with technical teams, and supporting the broader Claris developer community. In this role, you will work across customer engagements, internal development initiatives, product evaluations, and ecosystem programs to help organizations get the most from the Claris platform. You will support the Head of Professional Services and operate across a fluid portfolio of projects, teams, and stakeholders. The ideal candidate combines deep FileMaker expertise, strong customer instincts, sound technical judgment, and the flexibility to contribute wherever the business needs them most.

Description

The Claris Professional Services team works directly with customers, partners, developers, Product, and Engineering to design, build, modernize, and support business-critical solutions. As a Professional Services Engineer, you will consult on customer engagements ranging from focused discovery projects to complex, multi-month implementations. You will also lead the development of internal FileMaker solutions, support companies evaluating new Claris products, and help strengthen the developer ecosystem around the Claris platform. This is a highly collaborative and customer-facing role requiring the ability to move between hands‑on development, technical consultation, community engagement, and cross‑functional partnership. You will bring customer and developer insights back into Claris, helping improve our services and potentially influence the future direction of the platform.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Head of Professional Services as a flexible technical resource across projects, teams, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for companies testing or evaluating new Claris and FileMaker products.
  • Answer technical questions, resolve issues, and build trusted relationships with external developers and engineers.
  • Consult directly with customers across engagements ranging from short discovery phases to large, multi‑month solution builds.
  • Collaborate with Claris partners, customers, and Engineering teams to design and deliver tailored FileMaker solutions.
  • Lead the full development lifecycle for internal FileMaker solutions, including requirements gathering, solution architecture, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Support the migration and modernization of legacy systems by standardizing workflows, improving reliability, and applying current platform capabilities.
  • Champion robust testing practices and maintain clear, accurate documentation across solutions and systems.
  • Monitor community and developer activity, identify recurring issues, and share actionable insights with Professional Services, Product, and Engineering.
  • Help grow and maintain a healthy, knowledgeable, and engaged developer ecosystem around Claris products and services.
  • Stay current with the latest Claris platform capabilities, including AI integrations and recent FileMaker releases.
  • Contribute customer, developer, and technical feedback that may help inform the future direction of the FileMaker platform.
  • Participate in daily standups and help establish clear development practices and standards across a dynamic, project-based team.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 7+ years of demonstrated experience designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining solutions using the Claris FileMaker platform.
  • Strong knowledge of FileMaker solution architecture, data modeling, scripting, layouts, integrations, security, testing, and deployment.
  • Experience gathering business requirements and translating them into reliable technical solutions.
  • Experience working directly with customers, partners, developers, or other external technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead projects through the complete software development lifecycle.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Strong commitment to solution quality, testing, documentation, and long‑term maintainability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and stakeholders in a fast‑moving environment.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across distributed and cross‑functional teams.
  • Experience in professional services, technical consulting, solution architecture, or customer‑facing engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of the FileMaker platform and its broader developer ecosystem.
  • Experience modernizing legacy FileMaker solutions or migrating complex business systems.
  • Experience designing and delivering large‑scale or business‑critical FileMaker implementations.
  • Familiarity with APIs, web services, cloud platforms, authentication technologies, and third‑party integrations.
  • Experience incorporating AI services or AI‑enabled workflows into business applications.
  • Experience engaging with developer communities, beta programs, technical enablement initiatives, or product feedback programs.
  • Experience defining development, testing, documentation, and release‑management standards.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to operate effectively when requirements, priorities, or project needs evolve.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
