What is a professional engineer?

Professional Engineers (PEs) are licensed engineers who have met the education, experience, and exam requirements established by their state or country. They are legally authorized to sign off on engineering projects, offer their services to the public, and take responsibility for the safety and integrity of engineering work. Becoming a PE typically involves earning an accredited engineering degree, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, gaining relevant work experience, and passing the Professional Engineering (PE) exam. The PE license signifies a high standard of competence and ethics in the engineering profession.

What can professional engineers do?

Professional engineers design, develop, and evaluate systems, structures, and processes across various industries such as construction, manufacturing, and technology. They apply scientific and mathematical principles, often hold licensure, and are responsible for ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency in their projects.

What is the difference between Professional Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectProfessional EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsRequires PE license, degree, work experience, examRequires degree, possibly fundamentals exam, but not license
Work EnvironmentDesign, review, sign off on projects, often in consulting or engineering firmsDesign, analysis, manufacturing, and testing in various industries
Industry UsageLicensed in engineering projects, legal responsibilityCommonly employed in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and more

The main difference between a Professional Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer is that the PE is licensed and authorized to sign off on engineering projects, ensuring legal and safety standards are met. Mechanical Engineers typically hold the necessary education and experience but do not have licensing requirements unless they pursue PE licensure. Both roles work closely in engineering fields, but the PE designation signifies a higher level of responsibility and legal accountability.

What does a professional engineer do?

A professional engineer uses mathematics and science to create safe and efficient buildings, machines, and applications. Engineers typically specialize in a particular field, such as aerospace, mechanical, or structural engineering. Your job duties vary depending on your area of expertise and employer but may include creating plans, designing machinery, or building skyscrapers. This career often involves a combination of office and field work. Frequent travel is an additional job requirement for many professional engineering jobs. Long hours and overtime work are also expected to meet deadlines.

What are some common challenges professional engineers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Professional Engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges in prioritizing tasks, coordinating with diverse teams, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to handle shifting deadlines and resource allocation. Collaborating closely with project managers, clients, and other engineers helps maintain project momentum and quality, while regular progress reviews ensure that no critical detail is overlooked.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a degree in engineering, typically complemented by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or project management tools, along with ongoing continuing education, is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management abilities help engineers deliver effective solutions and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure engineers can design safe, efficient systems and maintain high professional standards in complex technical environments.

Job description

Xgrid Inc (www.xgrid.co) is a cloud services tech firm headquartered in Silicon Valley, USA, specializing in providing expert consultancy and professional services in building secure, complex, large-scale, production-grade distributed systems in cloud environments (AWS | Google Cloud Platform | Azure). The architects of the Xgrid cloud business group have 20+ years of combined experience building production-grade hyperscale systems for top silicon valley tech companies including Amazon, Salesforce, VMware, Cisco, and multiple top startups with successful exits.

We are seeking dedicated DevOps and software engineers with a profound understanding of software systems and DevOps principles, specifically within the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) ecosystem. Experience with OCI services such as Object Storage, Functions, Compute, API Gateway, Oracle Autonomous Database, and Infrastructure as Code (IAC) tools like Terraform tailored for OCI environments is highly valued. Our cloud business group collaborates with premier customers in Silicon Valley and Europe, assisting them in developing production-grade systems leveraging the latest in OCI technologies. Experience with other public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP) is a huge plus especially if the candidate has experience maintaining, operating, migrating multi-cloud environments.

At Xgrid, you will enjoy being part of an extremely talented, motivated team interacting with both business and development counterparts to capture key marketing requirements and translate them to products and services designed for our customers. The ideal Xgrid DevOps Engineer will have experience developing and delivering complex enterprise-grade mission-critical automated software systems for our cloud customers.

If you are passionate about working with the world’s top tech silicon valley companies and highly experienced software engineers and are excited about solving interesting and complex problems and challenges in a fast-paced environment, where you get to not only grow yourself but also help build a team and culture, Xgrid has a place for you and we would love to have you onboard!

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and implement automation scripts and tools to streamline Kubernetes maintenance tasks, including updating cluster components, applying security patches, and performing node maintenance. This will ensure consistent and efficient management of Kubernetes clusters within OCI environments.

  • Design and manage Terraform configurations specifically for provisioning and managing OCI resources such as compute instances, storage volumes, networking components, and security policies, adhering to Infrastructure as Code (IAC) practices for consistent and reproducible deployments.

  • Create Python scripts to automate custom organizational workflows and processes within the OCI ecosystem, ensuring scripts are well-documented and adhere to coding standards for maintainability and scalability.

  • Configure GitLab CI/CD pipelines for automated application updates and infrastructure changes, focusing on infrastructure provisioning with Terraform and configuration management with Ansible, tailored for OCI.

  • Prepare comprehensive documentation for all automation processes and configurations related to OCI, including setup instructions, configuration details, and troubleshooting steps, using markdown or similar formats for readability.

  • Provide regular updates and progress reports to stakeholders on project status, milestones, challenges, and upcoming tasks, with a specific focus on OCI deployments and automation.

Required Skills:

  • Solid experience with Kubernetes, including maintenance tasks and automation scripting, with a focus on OCI environments.

  • Proficiency in Terraform for IAC practices, with specific experience in managing OCI resources.

  • Strong programming skills in Python for custom automation requirements within OCI.

  • Experience with GitLab CI/CD pipeline configuration for automated deployments, specifically within OCI environments.

  • Excellent documentation skills, with the ability to prepare clear and comprehensive process and configuration guides for OCI deployments.

  • Proven ability to provide regular, structured updates and reports to stakeholders, with a focus on OCI projects.

  • Understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, and proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language (Python preferred).

  • Good knowledge of Linux, software development best practices, and scripting for workflow automation within OCI.

Preferred Skills:

  • Deep familiarity with OCI-specific tools and services for monitoring, logging, and diagnostics, such as OCI Monitoring, OCI Logging, and OCI Events.

  • Advanced experience with OCI security services, including OCI Identity and Access Management (IAM), for securing automation scripts and infrastructure deployments.

  • Proficiency in developing and managing OCI Cloud Guard and OCI Vault for enhanced security and compliance within automated environments.

  • Strong background in implementing disaster recovery and high availability strategies within OCI, leveraging OCI-specific technologies and best practices.
