What is an Engineering Manager?

An Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees engineering teams, guiding them to achieve project goals and company objectives. They are responsible for managing people, processes, and resources, ensuring that engineering projects are completed on time and within budget. Engineering Managers also collaborate with other departments, mentor team members, and help develop technical strategies. Their role bridges the gap between technical engineering tasks and organizational leadership.

How does an Engineer Manager typically support professional development within their team?

Engineer Managers play a key role in fostering the growth of their team members by providing regular feedback, identifying learning opportunities, and encouraging participation in training or mentorship programs. They often help engineers set clear career goals, guide them through skill development, and advocate for their advancement within the organization. By promoting a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, Engineer Managers help team members stay motivated and aligned with both personal and company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong technical background in engineering principles, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly certifications like PMP or Agile Scrum Master are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills help you motivate teams and manage stakeholders effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering successful projects, fostering a productive team environment, and driving organizational goals.

Job description

About Nexla

Nexla is the leading Integration platform, built with AI, for AI. Nexla takes a metadata driven approach to converge diverse integrations across Data, Documents, Agents, Applications, and APIs into a single design pattern. We accelerate the development of solutions for GenAI, Analytics, and Inter-company data. Nexla makes data users and developers up to 10x more productive by delivering a true blend of no-code, low-code, and pro-code interfaces.

Leading companies including DoorDash, LinkedIn, Johnson & Johnson, and LiveRamp trust Nexla for mission-critical data. Named in the 2022, 2023, and 2024 Gartner Magic Quadrant™ for Data Integration Tools and top-rated by customers on Gartner Peer Insights, headquartered in San Mateo, California.

At Nexla, our culture is built around our core values: Have Empathy, Be Curious, Be Intellectually Honest, Achieve Excellence, and Remember to Relax. We put our customers at the heart of everything we do, foster a data-driven mindset, take ownership of our work, and believe in the power of teamwork to achieve ambitious goals.

Role
The future of enterprise software is increasingly AI-native, conversational, agent-driven, and deeply integrated into enterprise systems. We are looking for a technical, customer-first product leader with a strong operational mindset and a founder-like mentality for ownership, urgency, and problem solving. This is not a traditional PRD-driven product management role.

At Nexla, product innovation is deeply collaborative and tightly connected to engineering, customer workflows, and rapid iteration cycles. Product thinking comes from across the organization: engineering leaders, tech leads, Solutions Engineers, FDEs, customer teams, and leadership. The role of Product Management at Nexla is to operate as the connective layer between leadership's product vision and execution across teams.

You will help translate strategic product direction into coordinated execution by:

  • Researching customer problems and market opportunities
  • Synthesizing customer and product signals
  • Prototyping workflows and product experiences
  • Collaborating closely with Engineering Managers and tech leads
  • Aligning priorities across functions
  • Ensuring teams stay coordinated as the platform evolves rapidly

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys technical products, communicates exceptionally well, and understands how modern AI-native product organizations operate.

Key Responsibilities
You will work closely with the CEO, engineering leadership, EMs, tech leads, Solutions Engineers, FDEs, design, GTM, marketing, DevRel, and customer teams to improve product execution and organizational alignment.
Your responsibilities include:

  • Partner with leadership and engineering teams to translate product vision into execution.
  • Work directly with customers to understand workflows, pain points, and emerging AI use cases.
  • Drive product discovery through customer conversations, market research, experimentation, and rapid validation.
  • Prototype workflows, product experiences, and AI-native interactions to accelerate learning and reduce ambiguity.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering Managers and technical leaders to align priorities and improve execution.
  • Synthesize customer, market, and product signals into actionable product insights.
  • Coordinate product releases across engineering, GTM, support, marketing, and Developer Relations.
  • Help create clarity, alignment, and momentum across teams as Nexla evolves rapidly.

Qualifications

  • 4 - 8 years of experience in Product Management, Product Operations, Technical Program Management, Solutions Engineering, or related technical SaaS roles.
  • Strong technical fluency experience operating in product environments involving APIs, integrations, distributed systems, data infrastructure, developer platforms, or AI/LLM systems.
  • Ability to engage deeply with engineers and participate meaningfully in technical product discussions.
  • Strong customer empathy and a track record of turning customer problems into product improvements.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-moving, ambiguous environments with high ownership.
  • Strong prioritization skills and a bias toward action.
  • Experience with AI-native workflows, conversational interfaces, agents, MCP ecosystems, or developer-focused products is a plus.
  • Both strategic and hands-on, comfortable coordinating across teams while also prototyping ideas, exploring workflows, researching problems, and accelerating product learning cycles directly.
Preferred Background
  • Experience in data infrastructure, integrations, APIs, AI platforms, or developer tooling
  • Experience working closely with enterprise customers and technical stakeholders
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT, streaming systems, APIs, or distributed architectures
  • Experience operating in fast-moving startup or platform environments
  • Strong understanding of developer experience and enterprise workflow design
  • Experience collaborating closely with engineering leadership and cross-functional technical teams

Compensation
Compensation for this role will be determined by overall skills, experience, and location. The salary range for a US based Product Manager will be $150,000 - $180,000 USD. The package will also include benefits such as Medical, Dental, and Vision, 401k, and flexible PTO.

Why Build Your Future at Nexla? We are standing at the precipice of the GenAI revolution, but the biggest bottleneck isn't the models, it's the data. By joining Nexla, you aren't just entering a company; you are stepping into the critical layer of the modern data stack that powers the AI economy. We are the Data Fabric that enables industry titans like LinkedIn, DoorDash, and J&J to turn messy, siloed data into ready-to-use products for RAG and predictive models. This is your opportunity to move beyond simple tooling and build the actual infrastructure that democratizes data access for the next decade of innovation. If you want to solve the hardest problems in data engineering and own a piece of a market projected to hit billions, your career belongs here.
