Job description

GFT is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer – Highway Construction to join our Construction Services team in Laredo, TX. This is a full-time, onsite opportunity to lead TxDOT transportation projects, ensuring quality, safety, compliance, and performance in the field.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a Resident Field Engineer, you will lead projects consisting of the construction, widening, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of highway infrastructure including roadways, bridges, drainage systems, traffic signals, utility coordination, phased urban construction, and complex traffic control operations.

This position requires both leadership and hands-on field involvement. You will serve as the field leadership representative for GFT on TxDOT construction projects while actively assisting with inspections and documentation as needed.

In this capacity, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide Quality Assurance oversight and technical guidance on TxDOT highway construction projects.
  • Review and approve monthly pay estimates and verify quantities for payment.
  • Prepare and review correspondence to and from contractors and TxDOT representatives.
  • Facilitate and respond to contractor Requests for Information (RFIs) and submittals.
  • Prepare and review change order documentation and supplemental agreements.
  • Oversee maintenance of project records, including Daily Work Reports, quantities, materials documentation, and SiteManager/APCM entries.
  • Coordinate and manage field inspectors and on-site personnel.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with TxDOT plans, specifications, approved CPM schedules, and traffic control requirements.
  • Oversee work zone traffic control implementation and safety compliance.
  • Support SW3P oversight and stormwater compliance documentation as required.
  • Conduct and/or facilitate construction meetings including pre-construction, pre-activity, and coordination meetings.
  • Track project progress and prepare periodic progress reports.
  • Prepare Substantial Completion and Final Completion documentation.
  • Assist with inspection activities and recordkeeping support as project demands require.
  • Analyze and assist in resolution of contract issues, disputes, and field conflicts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you will bring to our firm: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline accepted by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TX PELS).
  • 5+ years of engineering, transportation engineering, heavy highway construction, or related construction management experience. Experience may be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
  • Related graduate-level education may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis.
  • Demonstrated experience working on TxDOT or TxDOT-equivalent highway construction projects is required.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving to project locations.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer*
  • *Professional engineers licensed in another state within the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must:
    (1) Meet the license requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act;
    (2) Obtain a Texas Professional Engineer license within six (6) months of the date of hire
 
What we prefer you bring: 
  • Extensive experience in heavy highway construction.
  • Experience administering TxDOT construction contracts.
  • Experience assisting Area Engineers with construction contract administration matters.
  • Experience reviewing shop drawings, change orders, supplemental agreements, and pay estimates.
  • Experience analyzing and assisting in resolution of contract issues, disputes, and claims.
  • Experience overseeing or reviewing traffic control plans and field implementation.
  • Familiarity with SW3P oversight and stormwater compliance requirements.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $90,000 - $130,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
