What is a professional designer?

Professional designers are individuals who use creative and technical skills to develop visual concepts and solutions for various industries, such as graphic design, fashion, interior design, and product design. They work to communicate ideas, enhance aesthetics, and solve problems through design. Professional designers often collaborate with clients or teams to meet specific goals and ensure that their work aligns with brand identity, user needs, and industry standards.

How do professional designers typically collaborate with clients and other team members throughout a project?

Professional Designers often work closely with clients to understand their vision, goals, and brand identity, typically starting with discovery meetings and regular check-ins. They also collaborate with cross-functional teams such as marketing, developers, and copywriters to ensure design solutions align with project requirements and timelines. Effective communication and feedback loops are crucial at every stage, from concept development through revisions to final delivery, making teamwork and adaptability essential skills for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, visual communication, and typically a degree or certification in graphic or visual design. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with design management systems are essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration stand out as critical soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the creation of visually compelling, functional designs that meet client objectives and industry standards.

What is the difference between Professional Designer vs Graphic Designer?

AspectProfessional DesignerGraphic Designer

The Opportunity

The Designer is responsible for developing high-quality, detailed models, drawings, and documentation that support the design and build of mission-critical mechanical and electrical systems—specifically for data center applications. This role produces 2D and 3D design packages, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, and engineering schematics that directly support accuracy in manufacturing, fabrication, and installation.

The Designer collaborates closely with engineers, project managers, and production teams to ensure all design outputs meet customer requirements, industry standards, and internal quality expectations.

What you will do?

3D Modeling & Mechanical Design

  • Develop and maintain detailed 3D part and assembly models using SolidWorks.
  • Create mechanical designs for fabricated structures, equipment skids, frames, supports, brackets, panels, enclosures, and related components.
  • Develop weldment, structural steel, sheet metal, machined, and fabricated components and assemblies.
  • Modify and improve existing designs based on engineering requirements, redlines, field information, manufacturing feedback, or design changes.
  • Evaluate designs for fit, function, accessibility, manufacturability, and assembly.
  • Incorporate vendor equipment and purchase components into larger mechanical assemblies.
  • Perform basic interference, fit-up, and design checks within SolidWorks assemblies.

Engineering Drawings & Documentation

  • Produce complete fabrication and assembly drawings from SolidWorks models.
  • Properly dimension and detail drawings for manufacturing and fabrication.
  • Develop drawings using applicable company standards and recognized engineering drawing practices.
  • Apply appropriate dimensions, tolerances, hole callouts, weld symbols, notes, section views, detail views, and assembly information.
  • Create and maintain accurate Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Ensure drawing information agrees with the corresponding 3D model and BOM.
  • Incorporate engineering and checker redlines accurately and completely.
  • Review drawings for completeness and accuracy before submitting them for checking or approval.
  • Maintain consistency across multi-sheet drawing packages and related assemblies.

PDM & Revision Control

  • Create, revise, and maintain engineering documentation within the company's Product Data Management (PDM) system.
  • Follow established workflows for drawing review, checking, approval, revision, and release.
  • Maintain proper revision history and drawing/document traceability.
  • Ensure models, drawings, assemblies, and referenced components are correctly linked and managed within PDM.
  • Follow established Engineering Change Notice (ECN) and document-control processes when applicable.

Manufacturing & Production Support

  • Work directly with Manufacturing, Fabrication, Assembly, and Engineering personnel to resolve drawing or design issues.
  • Incorporate shop feedback when appropriate to improve manufacturability and future designs.
  • Understand common fabrication and manufacturing processes including:
    • Structural steel fabrication
    • Welding
    • Sheet metal fabrication
    • Cutting and drilling
    • Machining
    • Bolted and riveted assemblies
    • General mechanical assembly
  • Design components with consideration for practical fabrication and assembly methods.
  • Assist with troubleshooting fit-up, fabrication, and assembly issues related to design documentation.
  • Support prototype, first-build, and production activities as required.

Design Quality & Standards

  • Follow company drawing, modeling, BOM, naming, revision, and documentation standards.
  • Apply consistent engineering drawing practices throughout assigned projects.
  • Identify incomplete, conflicting, or unclear design information before releasing work.
  • Take ownership of drawing quality and completeness.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of Design standards, templates, workflows, and engineering documentation practices.

Project Execution & Collaboration

  • Manage multiple design assignments and priorities simultaneously.
  • Communicate project status, technical concerns, and missing information to the appropriate team members.
  • Coordinate with Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, Controls, and other Engineering disciplines as required.
  • Work within established project schedules and communicate potential delays or design conflicts early.
  • Complete assigned design work accurately and within established project expectations.
  • Perform additional Design and Engineering support activities as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks 3D modeling and drawing creation.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design and fabrication drawing practices.
  • Ability to create detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings from 3D models.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, redlines, specifications, vendor drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of dimensional tolerancing and basic GD&T principles.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 drawing standards, including ASME Y14.5 and ASME Y14.100.
  • Understanding of weldments, structural steel, sheet metal, mechanical assemblies, and common manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineers, designers, checkers, manufacturing personnel, and project teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy.
  • Ability to recognize missing or conflicting information and seek clarification before completing or releasing work.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field (required).
