Familiarity with scheduling software, communication platforms, and relevant certifications such as first aid or elder care training are commonly required. Professional Companions often encounter challenges such as setting healthy boundaries with clients, adapting to diverse personalities, and maintaining emotional resilience. To address these, it's important to establish clear expectations and boundaries from the outset, communicate openly, and seek support or guidance from supervisors or colleagues when needed. Regular self-care and professional development can also help companions manage stress and ensure they provide the best support to their clients, while protecting their own well-being.

Job description

A private family in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is seeking an experienced, warm, and dependable Full-Time Companion Caregiver / Houseman to provide daily support to an elderly gentleman, age 90.
His wife, age 88, is active and self-sufficient. The primary focus of the position will be providing one-on-one companionship, supervision, personal support, transportation, and assistance with the husband's daily routine. He has early-stage dementia, so previous experience supporting seniors with dementia or other memory-related conditions is important.
In addition to companion-care responsibilities, the position will include light houseman duties such as overseeing contractors and service providers, receiving deliveries, assisting with household errands, monitoring basic maintenance needs, and helping keep household and storage areas organized.
The family is seeking someone with a calm, patient, and caring personality who is comfortable working closely with an elderly gentleman while helping him maintain as much independence, dignity, and normalcy as possible.
Schedule and Living Arrangement
The family is seeking a live-in candidate who is available to work approximately 5 to 6 days per week.
The couple spends approximately May through October in Michigan and October through April in Florida. The ideal candidate must be willing and able to travel with them to Michigan during the summer months.
Companion Care Responsibilities
  • Provide daily companionship and one-on-one support to the husband
  • Assist with daily activities and help ensure his routines are followed
  • Provide assistance with dressing, grooming, and personal care as needed
  • Provide support and supervision due to early-stage dementia
  • Monitor changes in routine, behavior, mobility, or general well-being
  • Prepare meals and assist with kitchen cleanup
  • Care for and organize the couple's personal wardrobes
  • Accompany the husband to doctors' appointments and other engagements
  • Drive to appointments, errands, grocery shopping, and other activities as needed
  • Assist with grocery shopping and household errands
  • Travel with the couple between Florida and Michigan
  • Perform additional companion-care duties as needed

Light Houseman Duties
  • Oversee and coordinate contractors, maintenance personnel, landscapers, pool service providers, and other household vendors as needed
  • Receive packages, deliveries, and service providers at the residence
  • Assist with minor household tasks such as changing light bulbs, moving small household items, and basic household setup
  • Help keep storage areas, garages, and utility spaces organized
  • Monitor the home for maintenance issues and report anything requiring repair or professional attention
  • Assist with household supply runs and basic restocking
  • Help ensure common areas remain neat, orderly, and well maintained
  • Provide general household support when the family is traveling or additional assistance is needed

Requirements
  • Previous professional companion or caregiver experience
  • Experience working with elderly individuals
  • Experience supporting individuals with dementia or memory-related conditions
  • Valid driver's license and a safe driving record
  • Comfortable driving seniors to appointments and errands
  • Willing and able to travel to Michigan for several months each year
  • Comfortable with a live-in arrangement and flexible to stay overnight as needed
  • Comfortable performing light houseman and household-support duties
  • Warm, patient, caring, and attentive
  • Professional in appearance and demeanor
  • Highly discreet and respectful of privacy
  • Dependable, trustworthy, and organized
  • Flexible and comfortable adapting to the family's changing needs
  • Open to a long-term, full-time commitment

Compensation & Benefits: Commensurate with experience.
