Job description

Ready to Practice PT the Way It Should Be?

If you’re looking for a clinic where you can grow, contribute, and be proud of the care you deliver every day — we want to hear from you.

If you’re a Physical Therapist who refuses to deliver average care, hates burnout culture, and wants to work with a team that actually gives a damn — keep reading.

Big Island Physical Therapy is growing, and we’re looking for a driven, patient-centered Physical Therapist who wants to practice at a high level, collaborate with a strong team, and help our community move better for life — not just “get through visits.”

Why This Role Is Different

We don’t chase volume.
We don’t phone in care.
We do focus on movement quality, long-term outcomes, and building people back stronger than before.

You’ll join a clinic where:

  • Clinical reasoning matters

  • Team communication is expected (and valued)

  • Patients are treated like humans, not units

  • Strength, function, and longevity are non-negotiables

What You’ll Do

  • Evaluate and treat patients across orthopedic, post-surgical, neurological, and chronic conditions

  • Design and implement individualized, evidence-based plans of care focused on function, resilience, and long-term health

  • Work hands-on with patients to restore mobility, strength, confidence, and independence

  • Collaborate closely with PTAs, clinical assistants, and front desk staff to deliver seamless patient care

  • Track outcomes and clearly communicate patient progress to the care team

  • Complete documentation accurately and on time (same-day documentation expected)

  • Advocate for patients and help identify programs or services that elevate care and benefit the community

What We’re Looking For

  • Licensed Physical Therapist (or license eligible) in Hawaii

  • Strong clinical reasoning and a desire to keep improving

  • Ability to manage a physical caseload while maintaining quality

  • Excellent communication skills — with patients and teammates

  • Leadership mindset (regardless of years of experience)

  • Dependable, punctual, and professional

  • Experience preferred, but the right attitude and work ethic matter more

About Us

Big Island Physical Therapy is owned and operated by Shauna Russell, DPT, MBA, who has been serving Hawaiʻi communities since 2009. What began as a mobile therapy practice evolved into clinic-based care focused on movement assessment, strength development, and correcting the root causes of pain and dysfunction.

Our mission is simple:

Make people strong enough to live the life they want — whether that’s walking independently, returning to sport, or staying active for decades.

We serve patients across the lifespan and believe that good PT should change how someone moves long after discharge.

Company Description

Pakolea LLC is owned and operated by Shauna Russell, DPT, MBA who purchased Big Island Physical Therapy in November 2015. Pakolea LLC was started in 2009 as a mobile therapy company that transitioned into more clinic-based operation in 2011. Shauna has operated clinics on Maui as well as Molokai but needed to move to the Big Island so her son could attend Nawahiokalaniopuu (Hawaiian Immersion School) in Keaau, HI.

Our company is committed to providing comprehensive movement assessment to pinpoint weakness, imbalances, and impaired movement patterns to not only improve the patient's current pain but to address the "reason" their condition progressed by correcting abnormal movement patterns.

Our team is dedicated to making our patients and clients STRONG in whatever activities they wish to do from being able to walk independently to returning to a college sport or just increasing their overall fitness levels by using current evidence-based techniques to address impairments with long-term benefits.
