Professional Autonomous Vehicle information

What is a professional autonomous vehicle?

Professional Autonomous Vehicles are self-driving vehicles designed for commercial or industrial purposes, such as transportation, delivery, logistics, or specialized services. Unlike consumer autonomous cars, these vehicles are built to operate in professional environments and may include trucks, shuttles, delivery robots, or industrial machines. They use advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, and connectivity to navigate and perform tasks with minimal or no human intervention. Professional Autonomous Vehicles are transforming various industries by improving efficiency, safety, and reducing operational costs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work with professional autonomous vehicles?

To thrive as an Autonomous Vehicle Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, computer science, and electrical or mechanical engineering, often supported by a relevant degree or advanced certification. Proficiency in programming languages (such as Python and C++), machine learning frameworks, and simulation tools like ROS (Robot Operating System) and MATLAB is essential. Problem-solving skills, teamwork, and adaptability help engineers innovate and respond to rapidly evolving technology in this field. These skills are critical for developing safe, reliable, and efficient autonomous vehicle systems that meet industry standards and consumer expectations.

What challenges do professionals working with autonomous vehicles face, and how can they prepare for them?

Professionals in autonomous vehicle development often encounter challenges such as rapidly evolving technology, strict safety and regulatory requirements, and the need for seamless integration of hardware and software systems. Adapting to these challenges requires continuous learning, strong collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Staying up-to-date with the latest research and industry standards, as well as participating in cross-functional meetings, can help professionals stay ahead and succeed in this dynamic field.

What is the difference between Professional Autonomous Vehicle vs Autonomous Vehicle Technician?

AspectProfessional Autonomous VehicleAutonomous Vehicle Technician
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications in AI, robotics, or automotive systemsTechnical certifications, automotive repair licenses, specialized training in autonomous systems
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, development centers, testing tracks, manufacturing facilitiesRepair shops, maintenance facilities, field testing sites
Industry UsageDesigning, developing, and testing autonomous vehicle systemsMaintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing autonomous vehicle hardware and software

The Professional Autonomous Vehicle role focuses on designing and developing autonomous systems, requiring advanced engineering credentials. In contrast, Autonomous Vehicle Technicians specialize in maintaining and repairing these vehicles, often with technical certifications. Both roles are essential in the autonomous vehicle industry but differ in responsibilities, work environments, and required skills.

Job description

Sabanto is a venture-backed, Illinois-Iowa-based technology company on a mission to drive autonomy into agriculture.

We believe the agriculture industry’s lack of labor will drive the adoption of Farming-as-a-Service companies using autonomous equipment. It’s this very spirit that drives us to build a robotic machinery platform, delivering a service that brings unprecedented efficiency, productivity, and cost to farmers. Join our fast-growing, industrious, and passionate team of innovators as we continue to disrupt the multi-billion-dollar agriculture industry.

You will own the design, validation, and production release of the vehicle wiring harnesses that connect Sabanto's autonomous control system to commercial agricultural equipment. This includes high-current power distribution, CAN and Ethernet communications, RF cable assemblies, environmental sealing, manufacturability, and supplier management.

RESPONSIBILITIES & OUTCOMES
  • Take specifications of Tractors, components and communication protocols and turn them into working designs
  • Component selection: specify the ideal wires, connectors, terminals, protective sleeving based on performance and environmental requirements
  • Complete technical drawings of wiring harnesses including wiring diagrams, 2D bundle drawings, and 3D layout
  • Fuse and circuit protection selection and qualification
  • EMI/EMC consideration and testing
  • Manufacturer selection, qualification, and inventory tracking
  • Own qualification and quality testing: test using diagnostic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and digital multimeters
  • Help troubleshoot issues with production usage
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Will to work an on-site position based in Ames, IA.
  • Bachelors or higher in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years professional experience
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • An entrepreneurial attitude with a keen eye for detail
  • Experience with DFM, FMEA, PPAP, automotive processes
  • Experience with CAN bus, ethernet, RF cable assemblies
  • Organized, disciplined, and can manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Industrious and curious – can drive tractors or willing to learn
  • Ag-gnostic and hands-on – willing to walk up to a farmer, talk the talk, walk the walk and understand how their systems are used.
BENEFITS

At Sabanto, every member of our team moves the needle. With a firm footing in our core company values, we’ve built a fast-paced, demanding work culture that allows for the flexibility, autonomy, and career opportunities you’d expect from a growing company. We offer competitive benefits including:
